Wins all round for GCC!

Match summaries for Saturday 3 June 2017

Garboldisham 1st XI travelled up to Fakenham. The hosts won the toss and put themselves in to bat and made a solid start with 82 runs on the board before Garby finally made the breakthrough just after the drinks break with a wicket coming from Dan Constable. This led to a whole cluster of Fakenham wickets tumbling for not many runs: 82-2, 93-3, 99-4 and 108-5. However, rearguard action helped Fakenham’s cause and they finished their innings on 186-8. Gavin Barnes took 4 wickets with Dan Constable picking up 3. In reply, 43 runs from Dan and 38 from Alex Hogg (both dismissed by stumpings) plus a late middle order partnership from captain Danny Cash (24*) and Jack Stevenson (22*) pushed Garby over the line in the 47th over and they won by 4 wickets to keep themselves at the top of the Norfolk Alliance Premier League!

The 2nds were at home against Rocklands and batting first, Garboldisham made a wobbly start (20-3), but great knocks from Harry Youngson (87), who was parachuted into the 2nds at the last minute, and Luke Rackham (41) steadied the ship and a late surge from George Gooderham (16), Ben Buckmaster (28) and not-out batsmen Dan Philpott (20) and Charlie Wright (36) pushed the Garby total up to a heady 270-8 after their 45 overs. Despite some lusty blows from the Rocklands’ last man in, the visitors were never going to come close to chasing down Garby’s score and they were all out for 136, giving Garboldisham a 134 run victory that leaves then still topping division four of the Norfolk Alliance.

Garboldisham 3rds were away to Holt. Holt batted first, but strong bowling and fielding from Garb’, saw the hosts bowled out for 110 – which Garby then chased down in the 23rd over to win by 6 wickets.

Garboldisham 4ths were at home to Diss 3rds. Garby won the toss and elected to bat and a brilliant century from Alex Cook (who I think was playing his first match of the season after coming back from injury???), plus strong batting from the rest of the team, saw Garboldisham finish on a big 283-9 after 45 overs. Diss made a good job at chipping away at the Garby total but it was just too much and they were bowled out for 176 to finish 107 runs behind.

A great weekend of cricket for the whole club!

GCC u17s pick up big win on first outing

Garboldisham U17s v Mattishall U17s. 31 May 2017. SNCL 16 over 8-a-side

Match report by Toby Culling

On a beautiful summer’s evening at The Langley, the unbeaten under 15s side of last year came together again for their first u17 match vs Mattishall.

After picking names out of a hat captain Toby found his steady scoring self, last in the batting order. Oli Cambelle and Finlay Penrose opened and got Garb off to a flyer!

8 overs in, Oli was hitting boundaries for fun to help his team to 70 for 1. The fall of Joe Baker brought “Game changer” Arthur Johnson to the crease. The little man hit some big shots including a massive 6 to the club house where he was caught by coach Jack Stevenson. Arthur went on to demolish the Mattishall attack until being bowled for 27 off just 14 balls! Not bad for a Sunday league player…

Next in was George Southgate who had clearly been watching the IPL and played an outrageous ramp first ball! The disrespect continued as he reverse swept Mattishall’s mean fast bowler. If that wasn’t enough George took Mattishall to the cleaners and hit a square six high into the trees to take Garb’s total to 162 for 3. But really, the stand out performer was Oli Cambelle who finished on 78. The Mattishall bowlers came off the pitch both fuming and in awe at Garboldisham’s masterclass.

However, defending this total was going to be harder than expected for the youthful players who may have been slightly overconfident. Some class batting from Mattishall’s opener, B Chapman, kept them in the game. However after a few tidy overs from Lewis Hart, and Finlay Penrose taking the key wicket of Chapman, there was no coming back for Mattishall despite a valiant effort from the rest of their team. Angus Russell topped it all off with his overs going for just 13.

Overall a great performance and a very entertaining game. Thanks very much to the Dan the Aussie for umpiring and Ross Johnson for scoring.

Bank holiday weekend round-up

It’s been a busy weekend of cricket for GCC. Here’s a round-up of all matches

Saturday 27 May

While England were battling against South Africa in the second ODI at the Ageas Bowl with a brilliant final match winning over from Mark Wood, there was an equalling exciting finish taking place at The Langley between Garboldisham 1sts and Downham Town CC. Downham had batted first and were 237-8 after their 50 overs. Despite good contributions from all the Garby batsmen, none of them were able to go on to pick up a big total that would see them easily over the line and going into the final over they needed 8 or so runs to win. Captain Danny Cash picked up a boundary and with 4 runs needed off the final ball, Cashy was bowled and Garby finished just short on 234-9.

Over on the new pitch, Garby 3rds were facing Gooderstone CC. Gooderstone won the toss, batted first but struggled against the Garby attack and found themselves bowled out for just 91 with Fevs taking 3 wickets, and 2 each for Jack Halliwell and Eddie Thorne. With bat in hand, Garboldisham took it slow and steady and reached the visitor’s total in the 32nd over to finish on 92-4 and win by 6 overs. Danny Moon was the pick of the Garby batsmen with 41 not out.

The 2nds were playing away at Mundford who were put in to bat first and after their 45 overs, Mundford were 146 and 8 wickets down with 3 wickets coming from Jimmy Gooderham and the rest being shared around. 66 not out from Benny Mann, 34 runs from Luke Rackham and 20 from Ben Buckmaster all helped the 2nds to 150-5 and another win that sees them go to the top of The Norfolk Alliance Div 4! Thanks to scorer Julie Humphreys for her updates on Facebook.

Sunday 28 May

Garboldisham U11s had a win against local rivals Old Buckenham in the South Norfolk Community League. There’s a match report to come from manager James Worby

Monday 29 May

After the disappointment of Saturday’s close-run defeat, the 1sts travelled up to Norwich to face Horsford at the county ground. Horsford were bowled out for 123 with Rob Fuller and Kieran Pask taking 4 wickets each. Garboldisham chased it down with ease to win by a walloping 9 wickets! Dan Constable was 74 not out.

And in a friendly at the Langley, Garby hosted their old friends Podington who have been visiting Garboldisham for many years. Podington batted first and were bowled out for 194 which Garby were able to match with game winning contributions of 74 runs from Will Pearson and 47 from Dick Culling.

U9s kick off season with a win

Tas Valley U9s v Garboldisham U9s. 21 May 2017

Match report by James Worby

The Under 9s kicked off their season with an away match at Tas Valley. Captain Jago Bucher won the toss and chose to field.

Jago and Ryan Woodrow opened the bowling for Garby and restricted Tas Valley’s scoring opportunities thanks to their accurate bowling and good fielding by all, including Oscar Harris who was undertaking wicket keeping duties for the first time. Jago, Libby Worby, Freya Button, Oscar Baker, Johnny Wynn and Braydon Grant each got a wicket too, meaning that by the end of the allotted 16 overs, Garby had restricted Tas Valley to a total of 139 for 6 (a net score of 109).

Johnny and Braydon opened the batting for Garby and scored well, including an excellent 4 for Johnny, without losing any wickets. They were followed by Libby and Ryan, then Freya and Jago who all batted out their 4 over spells without losing any wickets. By the time Oscar Harris and Oscar Baker came on for the final 4 overs Garby were ahead and despite losing an early wicket batted well together and scored a number of runs thanks to a four and some good calls for quick singles. The match ended without any further loss of wickets giving Garby a well-deserved victory with 144 for 1 (a net score of 139).

Well done to all.

And special thanks to all the parents for helping me run the game.

Ouch! Match summaries Saturday 20 May

Photo: 2nd team captain James Worby breaks a finger while fielding in the slips. Worbs will be out of action for 4-6 weeks

Garboldisham 1st XI travelled out towards Kings Lynn to face North Runcton CC. Runcton batted first and Garby found their openers impossible to dislodge, and 38 overs in, the home side were on 157-0. With rain falling, an early tea was taken and the game was reduced to 45 overs with Runcton finishing on 210-2. Garboldisham made a good start and were on 76-1 before another downpour forced them back into the pavilion, and with no let-up in the weather, the match was abandoned with both sides picking up just a small handful of points.

Back in Garboldisham, the 2nds were at home to Bircham CC who batted first. 30 or so overs in, the Bircham batsman edged a ball which flew through to Garby captain James Worby who was fielding in the slips. The ball hit the tip of Worby’s left index finger and the captain was forced to retire with a suspected broken finger. The visitors ended on 196-7 off their 45 overs. The Garby wickets were shared around with the best bowling figures coming from Karl Gooderham (2-18) and youngster Toby Culling (2-21). Rain had interrupted play towards the end of the visitor’s innings and now, with bat in hand, Garby had a wet outfield to contend with as well as being a batsman down. Opener Jon Olpin was looking comfortable on 22 until he was stumped. The middle order of Toby Culling and Charlie Wright started to build a solid partnership but some great stroke playing was only rewarded with ones or twos, rather than boundaries, as the ball either plugged or spluttered to a halt short of the boundary on the damp and spongy outfield. Once Charlie Wright was out, the incoming Garby batsmen were unable to give Toby the support he needed, and with only 10 men, the Garboldisham innings collapsed on itself from 100-5 to 118 all out. James Worby will unfortunately be out of action for 4-6 weeks.

Up the road at Great Ellingham the 3rds had a much better afternoon. Ellingham put Garboldisham in to bat and Garby were 179-7 off 45 overs. In reply, Great Ellingham found themselves bowled out for 138 in the 39th over. A good win for the 3rds with 57 runs from Mark Snowling and more runs added to the pot from Eddy Thorne and from Rowan and Andy Freake. Wickets were spread between Rowan, Jack Halliwell, Peter Barnes and Eddy.

At the Langley on the new ground, the 4ths faced Swanton Morley and batting first, Garboldisham scored 186 with Neville Kemp not out on 76. With the new ground’s short boundaries, the Garby total looked just a little below par – and so it was to be, as the visitors chased down the Garb total in their 37th over for the loss of just two wickets.

Today’s and next week’s fixtures: Saturday 20 May 2017

It’s looking good up at The Langley. Let’s hope it stays dry. Here’s today’s fixtures:

The 1st team are away at North Runcton, the 2nds are at home to Bircham, the thirds are up the road at Great Ellingham and the 4th team are at home on the new pitch against Swanton Morley. Good luck to all!

We have a home friendly tomorrow (Sunday 21 May) against Marlingford and on Thursday (25 May) the over 40s travel to Topcroft. Next week’s youth games feature the U9s away to Tas Valley tomorrow, the U13s away at Bradenham on Tuesday (23 May), the u11s away at Rocklands on Wednesday (24 May) and the U15s away at Great Melton on Wednesday as well.

Strong wins for 1s and 2s – Match summaries Saturday 13 May

Photo: First team scorer Dawn Briggs tots up the figures after the 1sts emphatic win against Brooke CC

Garboldisham 1st XI were at home to Brooke CC who won the toss, and with dampness on the pitch, put Garby in to bat. Tom Davey was out lbw first ball to one that kept low and then Henry Phoenix was unfortunate to be run out at the non-strikers end when the bowler managed to get a finger on to a straight drive from Aussie, Dan Constable. Dan went on to make 31 runs before edging one to the keeper. Solid middle order runs from Alex Hogg (42), Matt Allin (32) Kieran Pask (37) and Danny Cash (15) pushed the Garby score along nicely, and with the wagging tail of James Shepherd (24*) and Rob Fuller (15), Garboldisham finished on a meaty 233-9 off 50 overs. Visitors Brooke struggled right from the start of their innings and their wickets fell at regular intervals under the sustained attack from the Garby bowlers and fielders, and they were all out for just 67 in 30.5 overs. The wickets came from Alex Hogg (3), Gavin Barnes (2), Dan Constable (2), Kieran Pask (1) and Rob Fuller (1), and the fast hands of Garby keeper Pascal Walker produced two excellent stumpings. A convincing win from captain Danny Cash and the 1sts.

An excellent 95 runs from Jack Stevenson and 5 wickets from Jack Buckmaster helped secure Garboldisham 2nd XI’s victory against Stow CC. Garby batted first and were 242 for 6 after 45 overs. Other good contributions with the bat came from Jonny Wyatt (31) and captain James Worby (39). In reply, Stow started well but a mid-order collapse left them damaged on 128-7 and despite runs from their tail end, they could never catch Garboldisham and they finished 183 all out. As well as Jack B’s 5 wickets, there were two from Luke Rackham and one apiece from Toby Culling, Sean Taylor and Dan Philpott. It’s three wins out of three for the 2nds and a great start to the season.

Back at The Langley on the new pitch, Garboldisham 3rds struggled against visitors and neighbours East Harling. Harling batted first and were 219 all out with wickets from captain Eddie Thorne (4), Rowan Freake (3) and Peter Barnes (2). Tight fielding and bowling from the visitors seemed to strangle Garboldisham’s batting and despite runs from Mark Snowling (37), Will Goulding (34) and Rowan (39) no one went on to score big, and Garby found themselves bowled out for 165.

Garboldisham 4ths lost by 6 wickets to Old Buckenham 3rds. Garby were 135 all out after 40 overs. Old Buck’ chased it down in their 34th over to finish 136-4. Unsure who got the runs and wickets for Garb’.

Don’t forget that we have three youth matches coming up next week: on Monday the 15th the U11s are at home to Swardeston, on Tuesday the 16th the U13s are at home to Hethersett and Tas Valley and on Thursday 18th the U15s are away at Old Buckenham. And on Thursday the Over 40s are in action again and are at home to Tivetshall.

Saturday’s fixtures 13 May 2017

It’s turned into a lovely Friday evening here in Garboldisham – the rain has moved on and hopefully we’re set fair for tomorrow’s matches.

The Firsts are at home and face Brooke and they’ll be hoping to bounce back from their close run defeat last week against Sprowston. The second team are travelling to West Norfolk to face Stow. The Thirds are at home to our neighbours East Harling and the Fourths are just down the road at Old Buckenham. Good luck to all!

Yesterday, Garboldisham Over 40s oiled their rusty joints and played their first match of the season with a good win at Rocklands – with runs galore from Mark Snowling and wickets from Dean Smith. Evidently Garby only had ten and a half men – not sure who the half man was…? If you want to catch the Over 40s in action, they have another game on Thursday 18th May next week at home against Tivetshall.

And we have three youth matches coming up next week: on Monday the 15th the U11s are at home to Swardeston, on Tuesday the 16th the U13s are at home to Hethersett and Tas Valley and on Thursday 18th the U15s are away at Old Buckenham.
