Indoor team lose final

Indoor team lose as Bradenham Bears steal the show on Finals Night:

Bradenham Cricket Club proceeded to win the Breckland Indoor Cricket League for the second time after successfully beating Thetford in the semi-final and Garboldisham in the final during our 2018 Finals Evening at Thetford Leisure Centre on Sunday 16th December 2018.

Having qualified for Finals evening after finishing in 2nd place in Group A with victories against Swaffham, Rocklands and Saham Toney and only a single defeat against Hingham who won Group A.

The second semi-final saw Hingham, winners of Group A take on Garboldisham who were runner-up in group B. Garboldisham were runner-up last year so were looking to go one better this time round. Garboldisham batted first and with Allin and Tippett getting them off to a good start set a net score of 252. Slightly below par for Garboldisham having lost an unusual 7 wickets. Garboldisham started fantastically with the ball having restricted Hingham to a level 100 after taking 4 wickets in the first pair. Hingham never managed to recover from thus due to some hostile bowling from Barnes and finished on a net score of 177.

The final saw Bradenham take on Garboldisham. Both teams having won the competition in previous years they were looking to secure their names on the trophy for the second time. Garboldisham batted first and set a net score of 230 after a good bowling performance from Bradenham. Bradenham took the run chase right to the final over and finished on a net score of 237 and wins the final by 7 runs.

Four wins and a fun day out

On Saturday 26 May there were wins all round for all the Garboldisham teams.

The 1sts had their first victory of the season at home against Brooke. Batting first, Garby were 253-9 and then bowled Brooke all out for 114. James Wilby ended five short of a century on 95 and Kieran Pask scored 43. Pick of the Garboldisham bowlers was Philip King with 4 for 21 off 7 overs.

The 2nds continue their string of successes with a 5 wicket win away at Bradenham having bowled them out for 159.

The 3rds were away at Mellis and bowled the home side out for 119, with Ben Tippett taking 4 for 9 off his 6 overs, to help secure an 8 wicket win.

The 4ths were at home, batted first and were skittled out for just 113 – but then proceeded to bowl the visitors out for just 77!

To celebrate the four wins, an impromptu visit was organised for the following day to Chelmsford to see Essex at home to Surrey, and 55 GCC members made the trip and even got a mention on BBC Radio Essex for their hat wear!

Busy couple of days for U11s

U11s v Thetford, 20 May 2018

The U11s first home match of the season saw them pitted against Thetford. Garby won the toss and elected to field.

Jack and Adam opened the bowling to good effect with Adam getting a wicket in his first over.  They were then followed by of Libby & Sacha, Zach & Elliot and Robyn in her first match.  Despite good fielding and accurate bowling, giving away just 11 wides and 1 no ball in their 16 overs, we were unable to get any more wickets, and Thetford went on to score a total of 141 runs.

Oscar and Libby opened the batting for Garby. Unfortunately, a mix-up in the first over led to Libby being run-out and then both Elliot and Jack fell victim to some good Thetford bowling.  With Garby under pressure Zach came into bat, and for the remainder of the match both he and Oscar held firm and scored runs. However, they were not able to score at the required rate, and we finished the match with a total of 66 for 3. Top scorer was Zach with 17.

Despite the loss, the team should again be proud of their efforts and good teamwork. Steve nominated Oscar as the man of the match for his good wicket keeping and for batting for the whole of the Garby innings.

U11s v Swardeston, 21 May 2018

On Monday night the U11s had a difficult pairs match against an experienced Swardeston side.  After losing the toss Garby were put into field first.

Jack and Adam opened the bowling again but we had to wait for the fifth over for our first wicket from Freya’s bowling thanks to an excellent catch from Sacha. Further wickets came off Adam’s and Jonny’s with Ryan taking another excellent catch.  Despite good fielding and accurate bowling, Swardeston were able to set a formidable target of 351 runs.

Adam and Sacha opened the batting for Garby and were followed by Jonny and Ryan then Freya and Libby. Facing consistently fast and accurate bowling we were unable to score at the required rate despite only losing four wickets, and when Jack and Oscar came in as the final pair they were tasked with scoring over 120 runs. We completed the innings on a creditable total of 226.

This was another good effort against strong opposition and Ryan has been named man of the match for his excellent catch, together with good bowling and scoring a couple of runs with the bat.

U11s v Gt Ellingham

The U11s started their 2018 season with a ‘pairs’ match against Gt Ellingham.  Ellingham won the toss and elected to field.  Oscar and Jack opened the batting for Garby, and were followed by the pairings of Libby & Freya, Adam & Sacha, and Jonny & Abbey.  They all played well and, at the end of their innings, reached 246 with the loss of just four wickets.  Top scorer was Oscar with 13.

Whilst Garby had set a competitive target, they knew that they had to bowl and field well as the light deteriorated.  With Oscar keeping wicket, the rest of the team put in an excellent bowling and fielding display to restrict Gt Ellingham’s scoring.  On top of wickets from Libby and Adam, Gt Ellingham were run-out twice.  Going into the last over Gt Ellingham needed 10 to win, but an excellent display of bowling by Jack restricted them to just two runs, and also resulted in a run-out, which gave Garby a much deserved win as Gt Ellingham finished on 229.

The team should be proud of their victory, but they should be even more proud of the way they played together as this was an excellent display of teamwork.  Well done to all!

Their next match is at home to Thetford on 20 May.
