Garboldisham Cricket Club

Garboldisham play two friendlies this weekend as the season winds up. Today (Sat April 18) there is a match at home against Old Buckenham 3rds and tomorrow (Sunday April 19) Garboldisham travel to Old Buckenham to take on their first team.

The season starts proper in a fortnight’s time on May 2 with all four adult teams playing their first league matches. Take a look at the Fixtures and results page for details.

It looks like the club will be digging out and dusting down the old Garboldisham Foxes maroon and green kit so that it can be used by a Garboldisham CC U19 side who will be formed this season to take part in the new NatWest club U19 Twenty20 competition! Garboldisham will be in Group 3 of one of three Norfolk groups. Each group contains four teams and the Foxes will be up against Brooke Blaze, Sprowston Sprowcats and Swardeston Sharks. These three fixtures will take place in July and August and are still to be arranged so watch this space for details. The winner of each group will take part in a final’s day. Those eligible to play will be anyone who was aged 18 or under on the 31 August last year (2014). For more details take a look at the NCB website.

The last time the coloured Foxes kit saw the light of day was, of course, when Garboldisham U17s, captained by Lewis Taylor, won the Junior Carter Cup by beating Swardeston in the final at Manor Park, Horsford in 2013. This was sadly the last year of the Junior Carter Cup competition so the announcement of the new NatWest Norfolk wide T20 tournament is very welcome. GCC Foxes first won the Junior Carter Cup in 2011 and the winning team, captained by Rowan Freake, is pictured above.

Junior cricket training (nets) begins next Friday 17 April

All ages up to 15 years. (U17s train with the adults on Thursdays). Every Friday evening during the season. Starts 17 April with player registration.
£4 per session (Second or third child per family £3 each).
Annual registration £10 per child (Second/third child per family £7.50 each). All new children very welcome.
BBQ at end of session (Burgers £1.50, Hot Dogs £1.00). Bar open.

Here’s the match report from the tense and exciting Norfolk Cricket Board Women’s Indoor League Final which was played on Sunday March 29 between Garboldisham and Topcroft:

Having been put into bat by Topcroft, Garboldisham got off to a steady start with Jade Hoyte and Hanna Free batting well without the loss of a wicket in their 4 overs. Megan Hogg and Primrose Rushen were next into bat and played some good shots during their innings. Unfortunately the loss of a few wickets put the pressure on final pair Sarah McGahan and Lydia Raven who needed to bat well to get Garboldisham to a competitive score. With some sensible batting, no wickets lost and a lot of running, Garboldisham managed to reach 247-6 at the end of their innings, a net score of 217. This was the lowest score the team had reached in all their previous matches and the team knew they had to field and bowl really well to get a win. Topcroft got off to a flying start in their first 2 overs making a tense atmosphere at Taverham. However with some excellent bowling from all the team, wickets soon started to fall and Garboldisham took control of the game. Garboldisham managed to take 13 wickets, with some great catching, keeping and run outs, which reduced Topcroft’s score by 65 runs. Topcroft reached 236 -13, ending with a net score of 171. Garboldisham won the final by 46 runs. Well played to all the team, a great, lively performance and a deserved win! Thank you to Topcroft CC Women for a great final and to Kevin Denmark and the Norfolk Cricket Board for organising the competition.

Garboldisham Ladies have finished top of the NCB west league and will go through to the Norfolk Cricket Board Indoor League final on Sunday 29 March at Taverham to face Topcroft CC who finished top of the east league. The only thing that could have de-railed GCC from reaching the final was a big points win by Gt. Melton over Fakenham which would have taken Gt. Melton ahead of Garboldisham, but this was not to be as that game was called off by Fakenham who were unable to field a team. Good luck to GCC Ladies! Garboldisham Ladies have had a brilliant time playing in the Norfolk Cricket Board Indoor Women’s League. In the first fixture, Garboldisham beat Great Melton in a great win which saw the team chase down a big score of 278. The next fixture v Fakenham was another good win for the ladies with Garboldisham winning by 78 runs and taking 11 wickets. By the final fixture, GCC were back on top having recovered from their narrow-defeat to Fakenham the week before where they lost by just 9 runs with too many wickets lost costing them another win. In the final game, GCC beat Great Melton again, a solid fielding and bowling display saw Great Melton set a score of 242 for 6 (net 212). Emma Rogers and Jade Hoyte got the team off to a great start with the bat, scoring 162 for no loss at the end of their 4 overs. Megan Hogg and Primrose Rushen continued the good chase by bringing the team over their target for only 1 wicket loss. Sarah McGahan and Lydia Raven finished off the innings managing to only lose 1 more wicket and keeping the team way above the target they needed to win. Garboldisham finished 288 for 2, giving a net score of 278. Garboldisham Ladies now await the result of the final fixture in the group next week to find out whether they have made the final on Sunday 29^th March at Taverham Hall against the winners of the other league, but being 27 points clear at the top of their group has put them in a great position. Well played ladies, great team work and performances all round!

Head Groundsman, Andy Smith, took advantage of the fine weather to give the squares their first cut of the season. The mower was carefully set to just nip off the dead tips of grass and the brown uneven squares were soon transformed into stripey manicured surfaces. Andy followed up the mowing with a dressing of fertiliser which gives the grass the health and strength that it will need to see it through the season. The winter weather will have lifted the grass slightly and so in a few weeks time the squares will be rolled to compact them and to provide the hard surface needed.
