U9s first game of the season

Garboldisham 232 v Topcroft 285.

Sunday 10 May, 2015. Norfolk Cricket Alliance

The Under 9’s kicked off their season this Sunday with their first game. This was a pretty fresh looking side with many of the players making their debut for Garboldisham.

Losing the toss, Garby were put in to field first, with Daniel Worby and Nathan Muggridge opening the bowling and getting the team off to a steady start and with Daniel ending up on 0 for 10 off 3 and Nathan finishing on 0 for 5 off 3. Nathan then went on to take an amazing diving catch off Lauren Rhind’s bowling. Henry Grey-Davies took the only other wicket leaving Topcroft with a score of 285.

Jago Bucher and Ryan Woodrow opened the batting for Garby with both playing their first ever game and doing really well for their first appearance. Daniel Flatman and Henry Grey-Davies then went on to score 14 between them. The pairing of siblings Lauren and Jamie Rhind pushed the score on to 235 and the final batting pair of Daniel and Nathan took the team to a gross score of 260, with Daniel scoring 5 and Nathan scoring 9. Unfortunately with Topcroft taking 7 wickets it meant that Garboldisham ended up with a net score of 232 (4 runs deducted per wicket)

Well done Topcroft who put on a great fielding performance! Well done to Garboldisham for doing so well with so many new players.

Fun in the sun at Ellingham

Norfolk Alliance U11s league. 16 overs pairs. 12 May 2015

Gt Ellingham 276 Garboldisham 226

GarbyU11’s  travelled toGtEllingham on Tuesday to play them in the Norfolk Alliance League. Winning thetossGarby elected to field first and bowled and fielded really well. There was great bowling all round with special mentions to Jess Davey (0 for 8 off 3), James Davey (0 for 15 off 3) and Georgia Casey who took two wickets giving her 2 for 15 off 3. Ethan Harris put in a good wicket keeping performance in his first time taking on the role.
Garby then got off to a great start with the bat with Drew Harris and Ethan Harris opening the batting and scoring 14 between them but unfortunately also loosing 2 wickets. James Davey and Ethan Murphy then went on to put on a good partnership with James hitting a lovely four but unfortunately he hit his stumps afterwards giving the opposition another wicket. Hamish Russell and Ronnie Stevenson were the next batting pair and Hamish played some lovely shots, hitting the ball for four. Jess and Georgia finished with another good paring and Garby ended up with a gross score of 251 but with a few too many wickets this was reduced to 226 and it meant that Gt Ellingham finished as winners.
A good game all round and well done to Great Ellingham.

Bittersweet memories

If we step back 32 years, the photo shows the GCC Bob Carter Trophy winning side from 1983. Mervyn Mitchell who sadly died last Wednesday 6 May after a short illness is pictured in the front row, second from left. Mervyn had been a loyal player, member and supporter of Garboldisham Cricket Club for more than 4 decades and he will be greatly missed.

Older and younger club members will spot some other familiar faces in the line up – Chairman Robert Leech, past President Philip Southgate, John Hogg and Neville Kemp amongst others. And of course, one of the club’s finest players and supporters – a young looking Ian Melvin, who died last December, is pictured in the middle of the back row.

Two minutes silence were held in memory of Mervyn Mitchell before the start of last Saturday’s game (9 May) between Garboldisham A (2nds) and Mundford at The Langley. The club flag has been flying at half mast.

Under 11s in close run thriller

Norfolk Alliance U11s league. 16 overs pairs

Garboldisham 257 Hethersett and Tas Valley 259

Garboldisham U11s took to the cricket pitch in what can only be described as hurricane like conditions to play against Heatherset and Tas Valley.
Both teams had a mixture of experienced players and beginners between them.
Garby fielded first and taking the weather conditions into account, all players bowled really well. Harry Button took a run-out off the first ball of the innings and he then went on to take two more wickets later on in the game. There was also a great bowling performance from both James Davey and Georgia Casey who picked up another wicket for the team, leaving Tas Valley with a score of 259.
After a quick rain break, Garboldisham batted and there were some great performances all round especially with it being so early on in the season. Adam Balding and Ethan Harris got off to a great start in their paring, scoring 7 runs between them and losing no wickets. Hamish Russell then went on to help his partner, showing her how it’s done with Bella Litewska scoring her first run for the under 11s. Harry Button and James Davey then came on and demonstrated great team work and a great batting performance with James hitting some boundaries and Harry not far behind him. The final pair of Will Cunningham and Georgia Casey also showed a great batting performance with Georgia supporting Will while they got closer to the total. Unfortunately there was just one too many wickets lost by the Garby side resulting in them losing by just two runs.
Well done to all players and to Tas Valley who were a friendly side to play.

Olpin smashes it around the park for U17 victory

South Norfolk Community League. 8-a-side. 16 overs (reduced to 15 per side due to weather)

Garboldisham U17s 131 for 2 v Diss U17s 101 for 3

6 May 2015

On a cold, wet and windy Wednesday evening. Garboldisham Under 17 team faced Diss in their first game of the new season. Captain Callum Olpin lost the toss and Garby were put into bat. After a quiet start the opening pair of Toby Culling and Callum Olpin soon clocked up the runs before Culling was caught for 12 off the bowling of Ross Eddue. Luke Hollend was next in and next out, departing for 10 after being bowled by Heaton. Joe Baker batted well and together with Olpin they pushed the Garby score up to 131 for 2 with Olpin finishing up with an impressive opening knock of 75 not out.

In reply Diss started well with some good stroke play but were pegged back when Owen Blakely was caught lbw by Oscar Lane. Young and Eddue then batted well to bring the score to 70 before Tommy Ling bowled Eddue. Young battled on with some fine shots to the boundary before eventually being caught behind off the bowling of Culling. Browne and Hunt tried to reach Garby’s total within the final few overs but failed to do so and Diss finished on 101 for 3.

Thank you to Diss for a good and enjoyable game in miserable weather. Bring on the sunshine!

Hoyte hits match winning 39* for GCC Ladies

Garboldisham Ladies v Norwich 4 May 2015

Garboldisham 107 for 4. Norwich 47 all out

Garboldisham win by 60 runs

Garboldisham Ladies v Fakenham  4 May 2015

Fakenham 133 for 1. Garboldisham 74 all out

Fakenham win by 59 runs

Garboldisham Ladies started their season with two fixtures on bank holiday Monday. In the first game, Norwich put Garboldisham into bat. After a slow start and the loss of an early wicket, some great batting and quick running by the team led to a steady total building. A great knock of 39 not out by Jade Hoyte was the highlight of the innings. Emma Rogers (15) also chipped in with some valuable runs and Garboldisham reached a total of 107 for 4. Garboldisham fielded and bowled really well, including a great catch by Emma Rogers and a sharp run out by Hanna Free. Garboldisham comfortably won their first game after bowling Norwich out for 47 and got the day off to a great start.

In the second fixture, Fakenham hit a bigger total of 133-1. Some top batting from in-form players gave them a good total despite tight bowling from the Garboldisham side, particularly Eleanor Pringle on her ladies debut and Lydia Raven. Megan Hogg bowled the only wicket of the innings, getting out one of Fakenham’s key openers. Garboldisham got off to a slow start with the bat but Primrose Rushen scored 23 and Georgie Dunkinson added some valuable runs. However, some good catching and run outs from Fakenham saw Garboldisham all out for 74. Despite losing the second game, Garboldisham enjoyed their day getting the season off to a start in the sunshine!
