U13s in close drama against Thetford

U13s Garboldisham v Thetford, Wednesday 10 June 2015, SNCL 16 over, 8-a-side

Garboldisham 120 for 0 off 16Thetford 121 for 2 off 15.1

Garboldisham hosted Thetford on a sunny but chilly evening. Batting first, Garboldisham’s openers, David Thorne and Thomas Toward-Lisher got the team off to a great start. David played some tremendous shots and with some good running between the wickets they managed to bat through all the overs without losing a wicket. David finished 41 not out and Thomas 25 not out which was a great effort. Well batted!

In the field, Garboldisham started positively with George Self getting one of the openers out early on. However, with a few too many extras and some good running from Thetford, the runs started to add up. Thomas took another wicket, lbw, which brought in their number 4 batter who hit a startling 40 off 13 balls to secure Thetford the game in the final over. Garboldisham bowled well with Jess, Luca, Harry and Jared all bowling sensibly and Will Pettit diving around behind
the stumps – but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Well played Thetford and a good team performance from Garby. Well done to all.

Disappointment at Diss for U15s

Garboldisham U15s faced Diss at Rectory Meadow on Monday 8 June in a Norfolk Alliance 8-a-side, 16 over match. Batting first, Garby scored 90 for 3 with Joe Baker, on a current run of good form, picking up 30 runs before having to retire as per the rules. These 16 overs per side matches can get even more fast paced than a T20, and Toby Culling pressing for every possible run, was unlucky to be run out on 20. Finlay Penrose picked up 16 runs for his highest score of the season so far. In reply, Diss were just a little too strong and they chased down Garby’s score in their 14th over finishing on 92 for 3. The U15s hope to bounce back on Wednesday when they face Cringleford Lodge at home in a SNCL game.

“Ouch!”

Paul Feavearyear took a nasty blow to the cheek while batting in Sunday’s (June 7, 2015) friendly against Tivetshall. As Fevs said: “Enjoyable game of cricket today. I’d forgotten what winning was like! I did however learn two valuable lessons: there is a reason I don’t generally play the sweep shot and there’s a reason I normally wear a helmet!” Despite the ball in the face, Fevs went on to score 95 and together with a fistful of runs from Paul Baker, they helped set up a total of 207 for 7. Garby bowled Tivetshall out for 180 or so with youngsters Callum Olpin and Joe Baker taking a couple of wickets each. Fevs was lucky to get away with just a sore cheek and black eye…

Ton apiece for Williman and Leech

Match results for Saturday 6 June, 2015

The 1sts were at home to Gt Witchingham A who, batting first, scored 223 for 9 with Alex Hogg and Rob Fuller taking three wickets each and Callum Olpin the other two, plus a run out from Ben Asker. In reply, Garboldisham chased down Witchingham’s total with about 7 overs to spare and finished on 227 for 6 with Alex Hogg cracking the final ball away to the boundary to enable Garby to pick up bonus batting points for passing the 225 run mark. Kristian Williman played another majestic innings scoring a ton and finishing on 107. Hoggy was 49 not out. This was a very good win for the 1sts and it takes them to fourth in the table.

The 2nds travelled up to Sheringham, batted first and posted a reasonable 193 all out. However it wasn’t to be quite enough and despite Garboldisham taking 6 wickets, Sheringham finished on 194.

The 3rds were away to Ketteringham Hall, just up the A11 past Wymondham. It was an exciting low scoring game with the hosts batting first and being bowled out for just 130. For a while it was touch and go as Garboldisham’s wickets started to tumble but in the end they passed Ketteringham’s total with ease to finish on 131 for 6. Another win for the 3rds that takes them up to third in their table.

The 4ths hosted Norwich Bystanders A in a high scoring game full of boundaries. The visitors batted first and gathered together a tasty 265 runs for 7 with the wickets being taken by Lydia Raven (2), 13 year-old Lewis Hart (2), Benny Goodman (2) and one for Andy Smith. Not sure whether captain Robert Leech had eaten three shredded wheat for breakfast but leading Garboldisham’s chase, he scored a superb 115, demonstrating some of his old magic and helping the 4ths to their first win of the season, finishing on 266 for 5! There were runs as well from Will Goulding on 56 and 36 from Nick Asker and youngsters Emma Rogers and Lewis Hart all added to the pot. It was a great game to watch and was played in very good spirit by both sides and it takes the 4ths out of minus points and must surely mark the start of their climb up the table.

U15s suffer first loss of the season against strong Old Buck’ side

Garboldisham U15s 90 for 6 v Old Buckenham U15s 116 for 3. Wednesday 3 June 2015

Norfolk Alliance U15s 8-a-side 16 overs

Summer finally showed its face at The Langley and it was good to watch a game without being wrapped up in a coat. Old Buckenham u15s batted first and scored a well-earned 116 for 3 with Joe Baker taking a fantastic high one-handed catch off the bowling of Oscar Rushen. Georgie Dunkinson, and Toby Culling (caught and bowled) took the other two wickets. 116 from 16 overs is pretty good going in U15 cricket and Garby knew they’d have a job on their hands in chasing it down. Openers Toby and Joe Baker started well enough until Joe was out caught and bowled and then replacement batsman Finlay Penrose was dismissed in a similar fashion. The Old Buck’ fielding and bowling was spot on the mark and Angus Pringle and Oscar both saw their stumps tumble. Meanwhile Toby Culling, looking sharp and in the zone, kept the scoreboard ticking over with a mixture of hard run singles and boundaries until he was obliged to retire on 30. In at six, Georgie Dunkinson pushed the score along with a couple of well-timed edges that flew to the third man boundary and one of the shots of the evening was Georgie’s beautifully hit straight drive that brought her another boundary. Emma Rogers and Angus Russell added more valuable runs at the end but it was never going to be quite enough and Garboldisham finished 27 runs short on 90 for 6. It was an enjoyable evening’s cricket played in good spirit by both sides.
Thanks to Sandy Culling, stand in U15 manager, for her effervescent team management and hospitality and to Paul Marshall, one of last Saturday’s GCC 3rds heroes, for scoring.

GCC player stats now online

Player statistics for the 2015 season are now available online. Simply go to the information bar in the right hand column and you’ll find them beneath the League Table links. If you’re viewing on a phone or a tablet in portrait mode then you’ll find them after the news stories. At the moment we just have the stats for players in the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds but we hope to have the 4ths included very soon. The stats have been carefully compiled by Dawn Briggs, our 1st team scorer and Dawn will update them every fortnight. Do let Dawn know if you spot any anomalies.

4ths top NCL SoC table!

OK, so the 4ths (Garboldisham ‘C’) may well have had a bad start to their season sitting at the bottom of the Norfolk Cricket League Division 4 West with a minus score, but, did you know that they are currently top of the NCL Spirit of Cricket league table. Home teams are awarded Spirit of Cricket points by the visiting team for their hospitality and for playing a match in a ‘truly sportsmanlike’ manner. So well done so far to the 4ths for their good grace. It’s also good to see that the 3rds (Garboldisham ‘B’) are sitting in 11th place in the SoC table.

Garboldisham ‘C’ Captain and GCC Chairman Robert Leech is confident that the 4ths will soon get back to their winning ways and start to climb the league table after their very unfortunate season’s start when 25 points were deducted for cancelling a match at short notice because of player unavailability.

Win for the Ladies at Gt Melton

Congratulations to the GCC Ladies team who, with only 9 players, had a good win last night (Tues 2 June) in a T20 match at Gt Melton. The hosts batted first and scored 88 for 8 with Georgie Dunkinson, Sarah McGahan and Hannah Khan taking two wickets each, Megan Hogg taking one, plus there was a run out. Garby chased down Melton’s score, but not before losing 6 wickets themselves in a closely fought match, to finish 90 for 6 and winning by 4 wickets. Leading Garby run maker was Emma Rogers on 19.

Here is captain Sarah McGahan’s match report:

In the sunny but extremely windy weather last night, Garboldisham Ladies played Great Melton in the TGS women’s league. Despite struggling to stand up, a good fielding and bowling display from GCC ladies led to Great Melton reaching 88 for 8 off their 20 overs. Some top bowling from Hannah Khan (on her ladies debut), Lydia Raven, Georgie Dunkinson, Megan Hogg and Sarah McGahan meant the wickets steadily fell throughout the innings. A great catch from Eleanor Pringle and run out from Jade Hoyte also helped the ladies take control of the game. With 89 set to win, GCC ladies started the batting and runs started to steadily come. However, after a small collapse from the top order it took some sensible batting from Emma Rogers and Emily Evans to steady the innings. The partnership from these two, including some great running, led to the team needing 12 off the last 4 overs. Despite the conditions and only having 9 players, Garboldisham won in the penultimate over finishing on 90 for 6. Fantastic win ladies, great game!

The team on the day was, Sarah McGahan (capt), Lydia Raven, Emma Rogers, Emily Evans, Georgie Dunkinson, Megan Hogg, Jade Hoyte, Hannah Khan and Eleanor Pringle
