U19s t20 competition kicks off on Thursday!

Garboldisham Foxes U19s v Sprowston Sprowcats U19s July 2, 2015

This coming Thursday sees a newly formed Garboldisham Foxes U19s team face Sprowston Sprowcats U19s at The Langley in the new NatWest club U19 Twenty20 competition. Garboldisham will be in Group 3 of one of three Norfolk groups. Each group contains four teams and the Foxes will be up against Brooke Blaze (home Aug 12), Sprowston Sprowcats  and Swardeston Sharks (away July 29). The winner of each group will take part in a final’s day. Those eligible to play will be anyone who was aged 18 or under on the 31 August last year (2014). Check details with Kristian Williman who will be organising the team.

This new Norfolk based U19 competition is part of an ECB nationwide initiative launched this year and will help replace the old Junior Carter Cup U17s competition which was twice won by GCC in 2011 and 2013. Some of the players who starred in the 2013 victory (pictured above) will be playing in the new U19 T20 side on Thursday.

Should be a great competition!

Saturday 20 June 2015. Garboldisham v Acle

San George Thomas played his first game for the 1sts and, as tradition dictates, he had to sing a song after the match. Here’s San’s great rendition of an Indian party song!

Sunday 21 June 2015. Garboldisham v Dersingham

And the next day, Phil Carr and Dick Culling play their first game for the 1sts… I reckon Dick gets off pretty lightly – but great rapping from Phillippe.

GCC finish second in Norfolk Ladies Taverners U13 Girls tournament #thisgirlcan @NorfolkCB

Garboldisham U13 Girls took part in the Norfolk Ladies Taverners U13 tournament this evening. Despite the miserable weather, the girls played some great cricket and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. In the first game they played Great Melton. Some great batting from Jess Davey led to the team setting 77 to win. Garboldisham fielded well including a great caught and bowled by Beth Champion (who took 3 catches in total) meant that Garboldisham won by 35 runs with Great Melton reaching 42 off their overs. Old Buckenham were next up for Garboldisham and again GCC opted to bat. Some good running from Ella Dye and Megan Grant meant that GCC reached 55 off their overs. Old Buckenham got off to a slow start with some tight bowling again from Beth, Eleanor Pringle and Isabelle Gallant. The team played really well but with a few misfields, Old Buckenham reached the required runs in the penultimate over. The teams continued to play through the rain and in the final fixture Garboldisham took in Swardeston. Garby batted first and reached a great 67 with some good batting from Eleanor and Emma Sibley. Unfortunately, Garby didn’t get to finish the game due to the weather. A top performance from the girls meant they came 2nd in the tournament. A brilliant effort, particularly with some relatively new players including Isabelle and Alahne Brown who were playing their first club game, well done!

Firsts dismantle visitors with canny bowling. Saturday 20 June summary

Match results for Saturday 20 June 2015

The 1sts had a terrific home win against Acle and had the game wrapped up by 4pm. It was one of those days when everything just clicked. The visitors batted first but struggled to get going as their wickets tumbled at regular intervals and they were bowled out for just 86. Young off-spinner Callum Olpin took 3 wickets, Rob Fuller and Sean Taylor took 2 wickets each but the pick of the bowlers was probably Alex ‘Hoggy’ Hogg who took 2 wickets but went for just 11 runs off 13 overs including 9 maidens! There was one run out. In reply, Garboldisham lost just 2 wickets and quickly chased down Acle’s total. Best batting figures went to Pascal Walker with 32 not out. Afterwards, first team scorer Dawn Briggs summed the game up as: “Simply amazing to watch – amazing bowling and amazing fielding from the Garby lads!”. The 1sts are currently sitting 4th in the league table.

Away to Stow A, the 2nds notched up their first win of the season and picked up 23 points! Batting first, Stow scored 186 for 8 which Garboldisham chased down for the loss of 4 wickets.

The 3rds were away to Gt Melton B who batted first and gathered in 173 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Garby B finished on 105 all out in reply as they fought in vain to get close to the host’s total.

The 4ths struggled at home against Gt Ellingham. Garboldisham batted first and were trotting along quite well at 80 or so for 2 but then collapsed to finish on 118 all out. The word on the boundary was that if Garby could get out the first four Ellingham batsmen then they’d be in to a long and dodgy tail – but the wickets wouldn’t come. Eventually Lydia Raven, bowling a lovely tight line, scooped up the first Ellingham wicket as the batsman skied it and was caught. Youngster George Southgate took a second wicket soon after with a superb run-out: fielding at square leg he whipped the ball in to the bowler’s end to send the stumps tumbling. Good fielding from young Lewis Hart to stop a boundary and acrobatics from Pete Bray, weren’t enough, and Ellingham won the game finishing on 121 for 2.

Garby U17s and 15s doing well in SNCL Roll of Honour

If you’re interested in youth cricket at GCC and across South Norfolk then the SNCL website: www.southnorfolkcommunityleague.co.uk is always a good place to visit with it’s match reports, photos and stats. If you take a look at their Roll of Honour page you’ll see that GCC’s Callum Olpin (U17) and Joe Baker (U15) are topping the batting table for players scoring more than 50 runs, with Toby Culling not far behind. Callum clocked up 75* in a good win against Diss early in May (match report here) and Joe and Toby picked up 65* and 55 in their epic run chase against Cringleford Lodge last week (match report here). And Garby are looking good in the bowling stats table as well, with Tommy Ling’s 3 for 7 against Old Buck and max Elder’s 2 for 7 against H&TV making an appearance. Keep checking the SNCL site through the season for updates. The South Norfolk Community League also have a very good Facebook page.

Arthur Johnson takes 4 for 11 off 3 for U13s v Melton

U13s Garboldisham v Gt Melton, Monday 15 June 2015

Garboldisham U13s hosted Great Melton u13s in a 16 over, 8-a-side match. Having lost the toss, the home team began by fielding. Some good bowling from Thomas Simpson led to an early wicket and Arthur Johnson, Max Champion, Ella Dye and Harry Southgate all bowled keeping it tight. However a stronger Melton side started taking some quick singles and the runs soon added up. A great catch by Arthur off Jess’ bowling at deep square and another by Thomas off Max’s bowling gave Garboldisham 2 more wickets. The highlight of the innings was Arthur bowling a maiden in the final over and taking 3 wickets in the process, two caught and bowled and another good diving catch by Thomas. This top performance led to figures of 3 overs 4-11! Melton finished 121 all out off their 16 overs. Unfortunately, Garboldisham’s innings didn’t get off to the greatest start with Bailey Farrant and Arthur both losing their wicket early. Harry was unfortunately run out as well and Garboldisham found themselves 15 for 3. Thomas Simpson and George Self both batted very sensibly to rebuild the innings, George scored 10 and Thomas who batted really well and played some great shots, ended with 14. Jess played her best batting performance yet for the U13s with some great shots and a boundary to finish 11 not out, supported by Ella Dye at the end. Garboldisham finished 63 off 15 overs, unfortunately Great Melton were too strong a batting side this time, although there were some great highlights and individual performances for GCC. Well played Great Melton and good work Garby.
