1sts move up to 2nd in league. Saturday’s results…

Match summaries for Saturday 11 July 2015

The 1sts had a very good home win against Topcroft, which now edges them up to second place in Division One of the Dipple and Conway Norfolk Alliance. Topcroft batted first and a late spurt of runs pushed their score up to 206 for the loss of 8 wickets which Garboldisham chased down with 18 overs to spare to win by 6 wickets and finish on 211 for 4. Captain Danny Cash hit the winning runs with a cracking hook shot over square leg that sent the ball soaring over the fence and in to the farmer’s field for six to leave Danny on 50 not out. There were 47 runs apiece from Kristian Williman and from Kieran Pask who was playing his first league match for the club. The photo below shows Danny Cash congratulating Kieran on taking his first Garby 1sts wicket.

The 2nds were away to Mundford and batting first, were all out for 172. In reply, Garby fought hard and took a cluster of wickets but it wasn’t enough to stop the hosts crossing the line on 173 for 7.

The 3rds travelled up to Norwich to face Sprowston B who set a challenging total of 281 for 5. Scoreboard pressure was Garby’s undoing and they fell apart in their run chase and finished 146 all out.

lydz, meg and emilycropWickets and great fielding from Lydia Raven, Megan Hogg and Emily Evans all helped secure the 4th team victory against Sprowston C

Playing at home, the 4ths hosted Sprowston C. Garboldisham batted first, and with a tasty 51 runs from Nick Asker and 49 from Robert Leech, they scored 204 for 8 (which was probably 50 or so below par on this normally high scoring pitch). Sprowston started well and were ticking along quite nicely but a late spell of great bowling and fielding from the 4ths saw the visitors wickets crumble in a flurry and they were all out for 174 and 31 runs adrift. There were two wickets each for Megan Hogg and George Southgate and wickets for Lydia Raven, Lewis Hardy and Andy Smith plus a terrific high catch from Emily Evans and a determined stumping from Nick Asker.

Hoggy hits half a hundred for Ladies v Gt Melton

Megan Hogg hit a superb 52 not out for Garboldisham Ladies in their win against Great Melton Ladies. Match report by Sarah McGahan, Captain

Garboldisham hosted Great Melton in the TGS (Thetford Grammar School) Norfolk Women’s league on Tuesday 7 July 2015. Having won the toss, Garby decided to field first. The innings started well with Lydia Raven removing one of the Melton openers and after several attempts from other people, Sarah McGahan managed to run out the other opener. Melton started to hit some good shots but tight bowling from Emily Heuschneider (on her debut for GCC Ladies) and Georgie Dunkinson, kept the runs down. A good catch from Jade Hoyte dismissed Melton’s number 3 bat and more good catches from Georgie Dunkinson and Megan Hogg and effective bowling from Sophie Snowling and Rebecca Cole (also making her debut) meant Great
Melton finished on 101 for 6.

Jade and Megan opened the batting for Garby and runs started to steadily flow. Some good shots from Jade saw her make 11 as Megan continued to push the score along. Georgie joined Megan who hit a brilliant 52* to guide Garboldisham to a comfortable win in the 16th over. Well played ladies! Great performance.

Great day for GCC with wins all round

Dick Culling clocks up 116 for the 3rds in their win against St Andrews

Match summaries for Saturday 4 July 2015

The 1sts travelled out east to Beccles where they continued their winning run. The hosts batted first, were bowled out, but posted a pretty high scoring 234 which Garboldisham chased down (236) for the loss of just 4 wickets. The 1sts now sit third in the league with only 14 points separating them and league leaders North Runcton although Runcton do have a game in hand. Garby are away to North Runcton in a fortnight’s time so that will be a key game to watch out for.

Meanwhile, the 2nds were at home to Norwich B. On this glorious summer’s day the visitors batted first but were restricted to just 157 runs for the loss of all their wickets. Jimmy Gooderham took 4-42, Fevs 3-41 and Rowan Freake 3-15. Now whether it was the fact that the 2nds had a lowish total to reach or just the afternoon heat, they started to make a bit of a mess of their chase with the top order giving away their wickets, and at one stage the scoreboard was showing a worrying 37 for 5… However, sensible batting from Andrew Whistler (36) and boundaries from Fevs, helped keep the Garby innings alive, but it was the father and son partnership of Andy and Rowan Freake that got the 2nds over the line. Rowan played with great maturity, defending the difficult balls but picking off the easy ones and dispatching them to the boundary with ease, and it was reminiscent of his match-winning, rear-guard action in the final of the Junior Carter Cup in 2011 when the u17s defeated Diss. Rowan finished on 34 and captain Andy Freake finished on 45 with three 4s in succession to wrap the game up at 161 for 7. This was only the 2nds second win of the season and it gave them valuable points to lift them off the bottom of the table.

The 3rds were also at home, and batting first, scored a hefty 288 with Dick Culling picking up a ton to finish on 116. The visitors, St Andrews, started well and were up with the run rate but the Garby bowling started to take its toll and St Andrews found themselves bowled out for 191 in 31 overs.

Fiery Foxes chase off Sprowcats

Garboldisham Foxes U19s. Back Row – Matt Plater, Phil Carr, Kristian Williman, Henry Phoenix (captain), Tom Davey, Sam Baker. Front Row – Toby Culling, Tommy Ling, Lewis Taylor, Dan Taylor, Callum Olpin

Garboldisham Foxes u19s v Sprowston Sprowcats u19s. Thursday 2 July, 2015

This was the first of Garboldisham U19s’ fixtures in the newly formed Norfolk t20 competition and it didn’t disappoint with lots of runs, wickets and fun. Stuey Taylor had fired up the BBQ and there was a blast of music for every boundary and wicket. The Foxes batted first and the line-up included several of the lads from the winning Junior Carter cup U17 side from 2013. Openers Matt Plater and Kristian Williman set about their business and Kristian continued with the great batting form that he’s been displaying all season for the 1sts, and he scored 52 runs with a delightful collection of shots before having to retire as per the competition rules. Captain Henry Phoenix picked up where Kristian had left off and the lads continued to find boundaries. Henry kept the scoreboard ticking over and with a plentiful supply of wickets in hand, Garby had the freedom to hit out with the batsmen able to sacrifice themselves in the push for a big total. Henry Phoenix finished on 33, Matt Plater scored 30 and by the end of the 20 overs, the Foxes had a mouth-watering 192 for 5 on the board.

This total would be a tough one for Sprowston to chase down and so it proved. The Sprowcats wickets started to fall at regular intervals as they tried to find that fine balance between scoring lots of boundaries without gifting away their wickets. But the Garby bowling attack was just too strong and Sprowston were bowled out for 88 with Henry Phoenix and Tom Davey on an impressive 4 for 8 and 3 for 3 respectively. (What were you bowling Henry? Obviously not those long hops that you bowled a few years back!!!). U15 Toby Culling had been drafted in to the team at short notice and he picked up 2 for 12 plus a catch. The other wicket was a stumping from wicket keeper Lewis Taylor who’s never one to miss an opportunity of whipping off the bails.

As Mick Ollerton, one of the Sprowston dads said in a tweet, “Well played Garboldisham – worthy winners. Great sounds, BBQ and atmosphere. Fab start to the U19 T20”. The Foxes now go on to face their other group opponents – Swardeston Sharks away on July 29 and Brooke Blaze at home on August 12. The winner of each of the three groups, plus the highest scoring runner up, will go through to finals day to be played at the Norfolk County ground at Horsford on Sunday September 6.CI7fXVcW8AES150

Last ball drama at Mattishall

Garboldisham U15s batted first and scored 135 off their 16 overs with Toby Culling picking up a half century and finishing on 53 and Angus Pringle scoring 38. The hosts nibbled away at Garby’s total and benefitting from some dropped catches and misfielding, secured victory with a winning run off the very last ball of the match. An exciting game that could so easily have gone the other way if Garboldisham had been tighter in the field.

Cheers..!

Thanks to Lydia Raven for organising the rather tasty wine tasting evening at The Langley yesterday evening. We were entertained by wine expert Camilla from ThirtyFifty and got to try out and learn about all different sorts of wine from around the world. A great evening with most of the wine finding its way down our throats. Did I hear that they also do beer tasting events…

1sts and 3rds scrape victory + maiden ton for Lewi

Lewis Taylor after Saturday’s win for the 3rds against Saxlingham. Lewi score 142 and notched up his first century for the club

Match summaries for Saturday 27 June 2015

The 1sts had a final few tense overs in their away game at Horsford but managed to scrape victory, grab the 23 points and move up to third in the league table. Horsford batted first and were restricted to 193 all out with Rob Fuller picking up 5 wickets – his second fifer of the season. With the bat, Kristian Williman had another superb knock for GCC, finishing on 96 and just 4 runs short of his century. After Kristian’s heroics, Garby survived a nervy batting collapse and with no wickets in hand the final two batsmen saw them over the line to win by one wicket.

The 2nds had the day off after their opponents Narborough pulled out of the league earlier in the season.

Like the 1sts, the 3rds had a heart-in-the-mouth game against visitors Saxlingham. Batting first, Garboldisham rattled off a heady 304 for 6 with wicket keeper Lewis Taylor scoring his maiden century and finishing on a fantastic 142 off 128 balls that included 25 fours. Fevs was 42 not out, Paul Baker 29 and Dick Culling 25. At tea, the 3rds were buoyed up and understandably feeling confident that Saxlingham would struggle to catch them but Saxlingham were soon finding the boundaries. After being hit for two consecutive sixes, Philip Carr made a breakthrough and bowled one of the Saxlingham danger men, but the visitors scorecard still merrily rattled along until Eddie Thorne slowed the run rate down with a couple of wickets from his spin bowling. Saxlingham were eventually all bowled out, with huge relief for the 3rds, for 288, just 17 runs short. Great entertainment.

The 4ths travelled down the road to New Buckenham who scored 214 for 8. Garby fell short in their chase as they batted in vain and they finished on 97 all out.
