Five wickets apiece for Fuller, Buckmaster and Barnes

Garboldisham Cricket Club scooped up three ‘fifers’ in Saturday’s matches (25 July 2015), one each for the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. Rob Fuller took an excellent 5 for 33 in the first team’s decisive victory at Mattishall to leave them in a commanding position at the top of the Norfolk Alliance Division 1. The 2nds didn’t fare so well in their home game against Division 4 leaders Winterton although Jack Buckmaster took a very satisfying 5 for 49. And Peter Barnes produced a bit of his old magic for the 3rds with his mixture of looping and quicker deliveries that saw five Costessey batsmen trudging back to the pavilion. If you’re thinking that Barnsey suddenly looks 30 years younger and has grown a beard that’s because Peter wasn’t around when the picture was taken and so Gavin Barnes stepped in for him!

Here’s another picture of Rob and Jack

Match summaries for Saturday 25 July 2015

The 1sts now sit 28 points clear at the top of the Dipple and Conway Norfolk Alliance Division 1 after picking up 24 points with a massive win against Mattishall. Friday’s rain had carried on in to Saturday morning but it finally stopped to allow the game to go ahead although at a reduced number of overs – 35. Garboldisham batted first and racked up 219 for 7 with Henry Phoenix scoring 83 and being run out on the last ball. In reply, the home team were bowled out for 166 to give the 1sts their sixth win on the trot! Second and third placed North Runcton and Lowestoft were due to battle it out yesterday but their game fell victim to the weather and was called off which meant that they both picked up just 5 points each which helped Garby’s cause in their battle for promotion to the Premier league. With five games still left to play, the title race could still go any way and next week the 1sts have a huge game against Lowestoft who they lost out to earlier in the season.

The 2nds had a disappointing win at home to Division 4 league leaders Winterton. The visitors scored 216 for 7 but in reply Garboldisham were all bowled out for just 114. The only real highlight of the day for the 2nds was Jack Buckmaster’s five wicket haul.

Meanwhile on the ‘new’ pitch at The Langley, the 3rds were having a bit more joy in their game against Costessey although they did get off to a wobbly start with the bat when they found themselves five wickets down for only 40 or so runs. However, Stuart Taylor pulled one of his big innings out of the hat scoring 68 and together with a good partnership with Phil Carr (28) and runs from Tom Melvin (22), Garboldisham managed to push their total up to 179 for 7. Costessey started well in their chase and were looking very solid on 60 or so for 1 (Ben Common took first wicket). A change of bowling brought on Peter Barnes and U13 Arthur Johnson (who was playing his first game for the 3rds) and they immediately made a breakthrough with a wicket each. Arthur was bowling a lovely tight line and he caught the batsman plumb LBW. A second wicket from Barnsey with a well taken catch from John Hogg, saw the visitors falter on 70 for 4. Canny bowling from Eddie Thorne produced two more wickets from his first over and suddenly Costessey were struggling on 80 for 6. The visitors fought back and Peter Barnes was slapped straight back for six but in typical Barnsey fashion, he took another wicket just a couple of balls later as the ball spiralled high into the air off the Costessey bat only to be caught by the gloves of wicketkeeper Dan Moon. Another simple caught-and-bowled, and Peter had his fourth wicket at 102 for 8. The last two Costessey batsmen were a bit harder to dislodge and the visitors upped their score to 149 before they were eventually bowled out. Barnsey took one more wicket to snaffle up a fifer and Philip Carr got the final wicket. So a good win for the 3rds that keeps them fourth in their league.

The 4ths had a very close game against Rocklands A. It looks like Garboldisham batted first and scored 160 for 3. The home side then survived the loss of 9 wickets in their run chase and Garby just couldn’t pick up the final wicket to grab the game. Rocklands scraped home on 161 for 9. Any more details from this game would be very welcome.

Picture of the week

This picture was taken by a roving freelance photographer called Shawn Pearce who must have been passing The Langley last Saturday 18 July and took these pictures of the 2nds against Dersingham. We’re pretty certain that this is Lewis Taylor knocking out his half century (55) for the 2nds who batted first and scored 215. Garboldisham went on to win the game by bowling Dersingham out for 137. There were wickets from Danny Philpott 4-32 and a couple each from Jack Peart and Paul Feavearyear. This was just the third win of the season for the 2nds but it lifts them comfortably out of the relegation zone into 6th place in Division 4 of the Norfolk Alliance. Well batted Lewi!

1sts move to top of the league! All Saturday’s results

Match summaries for Saturday 18 July 2015

The 1sts moved to the top of the table after an excellent win against North Runcton. The home side batted first and were all out for 196 with Gavin Barnes taking 4-38. Garboldisham chased Runcton’s total down with plenty of overs to spare and for the loss of just four wickets. There were a couple of big, big sixes from Kieran Pask (69) and Kristian Williman picked up another half century (60). North Runcton had been sitting at the top of the league themselves and this was their first loss of the season but they do still have a game in hand. Well done Garboldisham. Keep it going!

The 2nds were at home to Dersingham. They batted first and scored a moderate 215 including a well assembled 55 from wicket keeper Lewis Taylor. It was certainly a chaseable target for the visitors but fine bowling from Garby had Dersingham struggling to get out of the blocks and their wickets began to fall at regular intervals and they found themselves bowled out for 137. There were wickets from Danny Philpott 4-32 and a couple each from Jack Peart and Paul Feavearyear. This was just the third win of the season for the 2nds but it lifts them comfortably out of the relegation zone into 6th place in Division 4 of the Norfolk Alliance.

It was a dramatic finish for the 3rds playing at home to Eaton. Eaton made a slow start with the bat but a late surge from their number 8 who scored 80 runs, pushed their total up to 234 for 9. Garboldisham were always just behind the run rate but 52 from Dick Culling and some big hitting from the father and son partnership of Paul and Joe Baker, clawed the game back and a win suddenly looked achievable. Incredibly, the game finished on an exact draw with Garby also scoring 234 for 9! Points were shared with 17 each. The 3rds are now 4th in their league.

The 4ths travelled to Colney who batted first and scored 224 for 7. In reply Garboldisham found themselves 153 all out as they attempted the run chase.

Spotlight on Danny Cash

In the first of a new series of Q&As with key club members, we profile our club captain and all-rounder, Danny Cash

What are your earliest memories of GCC and when did you first join the club? Sunday morning club with David ‘Bangers’ Thomas. Along with several other club members of around my age it’s where my first steps into cricket were made. It was about 1997 when I was 10, nearly 11. I made my 2nd team debut at 13 I think in 2000 and 1st team debut in 2001 in the Carter Cup vs Sheringham scoring 8 not out!

Explain your current role at the club. How long have you done it and what other roles have you carried out in the past? Currently Club Captain, I believe this to be my 8th or 9th year in the role. I get the honour of leading the 1st team and picking the side. I also do some junior coaching on Friday nights.

What’s the hardest part of your role and what’s the most rewarding? Losing is always hard to take and players dropping out is frustrating. The most rewarding part is being able to play with my friends and lead them on and off the field, especially during times of success.

What are your best figures? Batting is 137 which I have scored twice and bowling –  5-10 in Menorca! My best in the 1st team is 101 and 4-44 in my days as a seamer!

What’s the best ground you’ve played at (apart from The Langley of course!)? Horton House CC and Reed CC are two lovely places which we toured to this year. Horton is a lovely ground and always a great place to play.

What’s been your funniest moment at GCC? Too many to single one out and they’re too rude to be able to publish online!

Is there a cricketer that you’ve admired and that has inspired you? Shane Warne – what he could do with a cricket ball was amazing and he took so many wickets, big personality too. In to my early 20s it was Freddie Flintoff – the way he played the game and the talent he had was always good to watch.

What advice would you pass on to any youngster who is keen to become a good cricketer? Work hard, always try to improve and most importantly enjoy it!!!

What do you do when you’re not playing cricket? Football, watching sport, propping up the bar at the cricket club!

What’s your proudest moment/achievement for the club (or otherwise)? There’s been quite a few of late as the club has had a successful few years. Guiding the club to the Carter Cup semi-final was very special and hitting the winning runs in the NACO was nice but I think leading the club into Division 1 for the first time in our history takes some beating.

Thanks Danny. Best wishes for the rest of the season!

Well done Jack!

Congratulations to Jack Peart (@ATouchOfCrouch) on graduating with a 2:1 in Law from Hull University! Jack is now back in Norfolk and played his first game of the season, for the 3rds, last Saturday. It sounds like he’s not as nimble as he used to be… “Back on the bowling scene today. 12 overs later my life expectancy has halved!” Jack first started playing for GCC as a 10 or 11-year-old and was one of the heroes of the 2011 Junior Carter Cup winning side against Diss CC. Jack has started work with a firm of solicitors in Thetford.

Picture of the week

Phil McGahan captured this picture of Nick Asker scoring his half century for the 4ths against Sprowston C on Saturday 11 July 2015. Unfortunately Nick was out, caught behind for 51, just a few balls later as pictured below. The 4ths scored 204 for 8 and Sprowston were bowled out for 174.

Lydia, Megan and Emily have a great day in the field

Two wickets from Megan Hogg and a wicket from Lydia Raven plus some great fielding from all three, including a terrific high catch from Emily Evans and a boundary sprint and slide from Megan to stop a four, all helped the 4ths in their win against Sprowston on Saturday 11 July. Garboldisham had posted 204 for 8 but they managed to bowl the visitors out for 174.
