Pitches ‘put to bed’

The pitches were officially ‘put to bed’ for the season on Thursday 10 September. The contractor D Watson was hired to come and scarify the pitches, gather up the residue of ‘dust’ and dead grass, sew new grass seed and add a covering of fresh loam to help the new grass to grow ready for next year. In previous seasons the Club has done this by hand with a team of volunteers taking all weekend but this year the job was made a lot easier and was wrapped up in a couple of hours. The contractor, who also works for Lord’s and Edgbaston, had lots of praise for Andy Smith’s groundsmanship and for the Garby pitches, and he reckoned that they were some of the best he’s seen! Andy will continue to mow the pitches at fairly regular intervals throughout the closed season to keep them in tip-top shape ready for 2016.

GCC raises £1000 for EACH!

Club Captain Danny Cash presented EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospice) with a cheque for £1,000 from the club on Friday 28 August after the Junior Presentation evening. The money was raised from the proceeds of the Missundaztood gig held at the Langley back in July in memory of Jake Snowling. Thanks to everyone who attended the gig and helped contribute to this fantastic cause and thanks to Peter Barnes and helpers for organising it.

Saturday night’s party wraps up a glorious season

Danny and the lads sing along to ‘We are the champions!’ at the GCC end-of-season party at Lyng Farm Barn, Saturday 5 September 2015

Saturday night’s end-of-season party at Lyng Farm Barn was probably the best one for a good few years.  There were some fantastic fancy dress outfits including Cashy as Dick Dastardly, Rob Fuller and Danny Moon as The Only Gays in the Village and Stewie Taylor as Mrs Brown amongst loads of other great outfits. After a delicious fish and chip supper, the Muppits band rocked the room with a mix of covers from the 60s to the present day. Highlight of the evening was when Barnesey finally managed to get Cashy up on to the stage with the band playing the opening chords of Queen’s ‘We are the Champions’. Soon everyone was singing along in full voice in recognition of GCC First team winning their league and gaining promotion to the Premier Division. It was stirring stuff and a great way to wrap up what has been an especially good season for the Firsts. Thanks to Barnesey for organising it all and to all the helpers behind the bar and everyone who helped set up and clear up.

Foxes fall at Finals Day

Garboldisham Foxes line up for the Norfolk u19s t20 Finals Day, Manor Park County Ground, Horsford, Sunday 6 September 2015

And so to Finals Day at Horsford where Barton Spartans (Ashmanhaugh), Swardeston Sharks, Fakenham Falcons and Garboldisham Foxes would do battle. In the first semi-final at 10.15am, Ashmanhaugh struggled to get a decent total on the board and were easily beaten by Swardeston. Going in to the second semi at 1.00pm, Garboldisham were probably the underdogs but Captain Henry Phoenix and the Foxes were right to be confident that they could go all the way – they’d come out of a high scoring final group game against Brooke where they’d clocked up a giddy 246 runs and they’d finished their group unbeaten including a victory against Swardeston (who qualified for Finals Day as highest runners-up).

Henry won the toss, and with some dampness still on the ground but with the sun starting to shine, elected to field first. Once Kieran Pask had found his line, he was well into his stride and he claimed the first and second Fakenham scalps with the Falcons on 25 for 2 after five overs. Tom Davey took the third wicket off his second ball to bring up 48 for 3 after eight. Any short balls were jumped on by Fakenham and hit to the boundary with ease, but with Callum Olpin joining the bowling attack the run rate was slowed and the fourth Fakenham wicket fell as Callum got one through the gate –  and after 13 overs the Falcons were 85 for 4. Once Callum had bowled his maximum four overs, and with Henry and Philip Carr’s overs proving expensive, the Foxes bowling attack suddenly looked painfully exposed and the captain had to call on part-time bowler Lewis Taylor to help contain the flood of Fakenham runs in the latter stages of the innings. Lewis picked up five wickets but by then the damage had been done and Fakenham finished on 155 for 8.

On paper we knew that Garboldisham could bat deep and that Fakenham’s total was chaseable. However, the Falcons bowled a good full length which the Garby batsmen found difficult to get away and they were soon in trouble as Matt Plater, Henry and then Kieran Pask all found themselves dismissed with the score on 26 for 3 after six overs. A flurry of runs from Matt Long pushed the Foxes score up to 53 for 3 after eight (Fakenhan had been on 48 for 3 at the same stage) but any hope was suddenly dashed as Matt was caught in the deep. Lewis Taylor joined Kristian Williman at the wicket and they nurdled the ball around picking up useful singles plus a glorious six that Lewis effortlessly guided on its way over the square leg boundary. But in the next over Lewis found himself bowled as he tried to play a ball just a little too late. Callum, Tom Daley and Dan Taylor’s wickets then fell in quick succession and the game was clearly up for Garby with the last few overs being batted out by Sam Baker, Philip Carr and Kristian who was still struggling to find the boundary and was eventually caught. The Foxes ended 42 runs short on 114 for 9.

It was a disappointing end for the Foxes who were beaten by the better team on the day – Fakenham looked much sharper in the field, bowled a better length and capitalised on Garby’s mistakes. Fakenham went on to lose to Swardeston in the final. Garboldisham can gain some comfort in the fact that they beat Swardeston in the group stages (where they’d set at total of 120 for Swardeston to chase but Swardeston were bowled out for 95!). Commiserations to Henry and the team who fought a fantastic campaign to reach Finals Day.

Congratulations from…

Bob Foulkes: Many, many congratulations to Danny & the team for an incredible past few years & for becoming Champions of their league yet again in 2015. It’s a privilege to have been a member of the club for so many years! Well done everyone from Robert (Bob)

Stu Taylor: WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE….WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!!!!! UP THE GARB.

Thomas Alexander: Congratulations mate! Great effort x

Andy Tebble: Hey Mate, Congratulations to Garbo on their winning of the Div 1 title !! Three South Norfolk teams in the Prem next season will be great for the area !!

Dawn Briggs: WELL DONE BOYS! I sit at every game scoring for our 1st team and some of the comments and behaviour I hear and see is appalling…..from some of the other teams we play. So it is with immense pride that I can report that I never been embarrassed by the behaviour of our lads even when they have been provoked. They play their cricket to win yes but not at the cost of the right spirit of the game. I believe this is down to the ethos of the club as a whole and Danny as a captain. So again, well done boys, I look forward to watching you play next season.

A word from Danny

Monday 31 August 2015

So today’s wet weather means that we are Div 1 champions and are guaranteed to be a Norfolk Prem side next season. It cannot be underestimated as to how big an achievement this is considering that it was only five years ago we were relegated into Division 3. The achievement is without doubt my proudest moment as captain and as a club member and it is a great privilege to lead a side of talented players, but most of all a great bunch of lads to the top division in Norfolk. It is also a huge honour to be the captain of a club that is going places. We are lucky to have a great club spirit within GCC and it is abundantly clear that this isn’t just a huge achievement for the 1st team, but for Garboldisham Cricket Club as a whole. Thank you to those who supported us and gave us a helping hand where needed. But the credit must go to my boys – we were written off by some at the start of the season but we played some incredibly good cricket throughout the summer months, always playing in a positive and an aggressive manner, which has won us praise throughout the league. Next season will be a huge challenge but if we stick together, it is one we can have great success in. Now to celebrate in style next Saturday! Up the Garb!!!

Danny Cash, Club Captain

Champions!!!

Last day of August, bank holiday Monday and it’s chucking it down with rain… Not much fun unless you’re a GCC member or fan…! The lousy/lovely weather, depending on your point of view, meant that second placed North Runcton’s final game at Topcroft was called off so they only picked up 5 points which left them 5 points short of Garboldisham’s total tally of 304!

So huge congratulations to captain Danny Cash and the rest of the first team for a fantastic season of cricket which sees them finish as champions of the Dipple and Conway Norfolk Alliance League Divison One and gain promotion to the Premier League where they’ll do battle with local rivals Diss and Old Buckenham next year!

Commiserations to North Runcton who despite finishing second will probably still be joining Garby in the Norfolk Alliance Premier League next season. Whether one or two teams are promoted is dependent on how the East Anglian Premier League finishes up and the EAPL season doesn’t finish for a couple of weeks.
