Decisive victory for u11s

GCC u11s v Gt Ellingham u11s

at The Langley. Sunday 15 May, 2016

Batting first Garby u11s notched up a hefty 160 runs off 16 overs with no wickets lost. Batsmen have to retire at 30 runs so the scoresheet read as follows: Elliot Harte 32 (retired), Jack Whitlam 34 (retired), James Davey 22* and Daniel Worby 26* with extras making up the difference. In reply, Ellingham were 43 for 5 off their 16 overs – so a big win for Garboldisham by 117 runs. The Ellingham wickets were shared between Ethan Murphy, Beth Champion, Ronnie Stevenson and Daniel Worby with a run-out from Ronnie Stevenson as well. Well done to the u11s!

Match results and summaries for Saturday 14 May 2016

It was a sunny but very chilly day up at The Langley. The 1sts won the toss and put Cromer CC in to bat. Garby kept the bowling tight but the Cromer wickets were hard to shift and by the end of their 50 overs the visitors were 241 for 3 with their opening batsman Matthew Warnes batting through with 115 not out. It was a par score for this pitch and one that GCC felt comfortable in chasing down. However, Garby got off to a slow start and then lost the early wickets of Kristian Williman, Johnny Leech and Dan Constable for just 9 runs apiece and so scoreboard pressure gradually started to build. Henry Phoenix was ticking along steadily but when his wicket fell, and then Kieran Paske was out after facing just two balls, the pressure was really ramped up. Captain Danny Cash (42) and Pascal Walker (24) kept the Garboldisham hopes alive but once they were dismissed it was curtains and Garby finished 84 runs short on 157 all out.

The 2nds had a better time at Great Melton with a comfortable win over the hosts. Batting first, Melton were bowled out for 179 and the pick of the Garby bowlers was spinner, Rory Olpin. Garby chased down the Melton total in just 24 overs and finished 180 for 2 to win by 8 wickets with Johnny Wyatt picking up a ton and finishing 101 not out. So it’s three wins out of three for the 2nds that currently places them at the top of Norfolk Alliance Division 4 with 71 points!

NA div 4 14.5.16

Back at The Langley, the 3rds were up against Northwold CC and batting first, Garby scored a huge 387 runs with Matt Allin notching up a massive 171 on his season’s debut and Sam Baker adding in another 77. The visitors never really stood much chance of reaching Garby’s total and they spluttered along until they were all bowled out for 111. A good morale boosting win for the 3rds after last week’s game.

Disappointment for the 4ths with their game being called off by their hosts Swanton Morley. The 4ths have now had 2 out of their 3 games so far called off but they do pick up a win (3/3) which places them currently at the top of the Norfolk League 4 (SW) with 74 points.

It was a mixed bag of results for GCC on Saturday with home wins for the 2nds and 4ths and away defeats for the 1sts and 3rds. Here’s a round-up of all the games:

The 1sts travelled to Brooke. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat and were 226 for 9 after 50 overs. Kieran Pask was the pick of the Garby bowlers with 4 wickets for 49 runs. The 1sts fought hard to chase down Brooke’s total and captain Danny Cash picked up a half century, but with two key Garby batsmen missing from this week’s line-up (Kristian Williman and Henry Phoenix) the 1sts came unstuck and found themselves bowled out for 196 in the 44th over and 30 runs short.

Meanwhile, back at The Langley, the 2nds were having more success. Rocklands won the toss and put Garboldisham in to bat. A sparkling innings of 73 not-out from Andy Freake and 49 from Dan Philpott, helped the 2nds to a total of 203 for 7 after 45 overs. Rocklands were then restricted to 180 for 8, to seal victory for Garby. The Rocklands’ wickets were shared between Ben Asker (2-22), Fevs (2-25) Sean Taylor (2-40) and one each for Jimmy Gooderham and Dan Philpott.

It was a glorious warm day in early May, but for the 3rds it was total meltdown in their game at Castle Acre… The hosts batted first and scored 243-8 after 45 overs. In reply Garby were just 25 all out. Not sure quite what happened but the Castle Acre bowler Elliot Whiting took 8 wickets for 7 runs…

The 4ths got off to a good start to the season in their home game against Beeston. Batting first, they totalled 247 for 6 with a century from Neville Kemp (106*) and a very impressive maiden half century (66) from youngster Louis Hart. Beeston came close in their chase but not quite close enough, and they were bowled out for 230 or so.

Historic day for Garboldisham CC

History was made at Garboldisham Cricket Club on Saturday 30 April 2016 when the GCC 1st XI played (and won) their very first game in the Norfolk Alliance Premier League. The 1st XI had topped the NA Divison One in 2015 to win promotion to the county’s elite league. Back in 1997 GCC had first dipped their toe into the Norfolk Alliance after having risen up from the depths of the Norfolk League, and so it was a very proud day on Saturday for Danny Cash, the 1st XI and the whole of the club to notch up their first Premier League win. 1st team player Gavin Barnes summed the day up nicely:

“Unbelievable game of cricket today to be a part of. Such a big day in the history of Garby Cricket Club. So proud of all you guys! Great result.”

You can read more about the game and the rest of Saturday’s fixtures here.

Four wins and a baby!

The club made an excellent start to the season with all four teams picking up a win. The day was rounded off very nicely with the brilliant news that First team bowler Rob Fuller’s partner Leanne had given birth to a baby girl!

The 1sts very first game in the Norfolk Alliance Premier League turned out to be an absolute thriller that went right down to the wire. Visitors Downham Town CC won the toss and put Garby in to bat. Kristian Williman appears to have lost none of his good form with the bat from last season as he got the team off to a good start notching up 75 runs and the scoreboard was looking quite healthy at 100+ for just 1 wicket. But then the game was turned on its head as Downhams’ overseas signing N Kelly took a hat-trick. The scoreboard was steadied and Garby finished on 204 for 8 after 50 overs. Downham started slowly and 25 overs in, were 3 wickets down and still 100 or so runs behind. However, with the Garboldisham bowling attack depleted (Rob Fuller and Alex Hogg both missing due to unexpected hospital appointment and football injury!), the Downham batsmen upped their pace, took the attack to Garboldisham and started to pick up easy boundaries and it appeared that they’d coast home for a comfortable win. But Garby refused to buckle under the pressure and continued to take essential wickets, and come the final over of the game the visitors needed just three runs to seal a victory. As Downham pushed for the vital runs, Luke Rackham snatched a run-out, and with no wickets in hand, Garby pulled off a historic win as Downham finished 202 all out after 49.1 overs. Phew!

Dan Cashy 30.4.16

Before the game, Captain Danny Cash presented Aussie Dan Constable (pictured above) with his ‘baggy red’ cap. Dan has joined us for the season as our overseas player.

The 2nds travelled up to Sheringham and batting first, were all-out for a lowly 168. James Worby top-scored with 59. But never judge a match by just one innings! It was a bowler’s pitch and Captain Paul Feavearyear and the team turned the game around and bowled the hosts out for just 122! Here’s Fev’s match report:

On a damp, slow looking wicket, GCC lost the toss and were asked to bat.  The new opening pair of Johnny Wyatt (21) and Tom Davey (2) made a solid and steady start, but both fell in consecutive overs, leaving GCC on 30 for 2 in the 9th over. GCC continued to lose wickets regularly, with batsmen getting starts but getting out. Ben Asker (12) was batting well when he received a poor LBW decision from the home umpire! Charlie Worby batting at three was the difference for GCC, playing sensibly with some lusty stroke play and making 59. After 29 overs GCC found themselves 126 for 7, but the tail batted well, using up the remaining overs whilst adding 42 runs for the last two wickets, with Karl Gooderham, Sean Taylor and Paul Feavearyear all making contributions. GCC were finally dismissed in the 43rd over for 168.

GCC knew they would have to bowl well, but conditions were on their side, plus they plenty of bowling options. Sean Taylor and Tom Davey opened the bowling, and kept the scoring in check, without making the early inroads needed. The first wicket fell in the 10th over with the score on 36, with Tom Davey and Sam Baker combining to remove the Sheringham Captain. Davey continued to bowl well with accuracy, barely putting a foot wrong in his spell and finishing with figures 3-22 from his 10 overs. He removed three of the top four Sheringham batsmen, including opener D King who top scored for the home side with 34.  The change bowlers continued where the openers left off, offering few scoring chances and always looking a threat. Sheringham continued to lose regular wickets with George Gooderham taking 3 for 25 from his 9 overs and Karl Gooderham 2 for 19 from his 10. The only resistance came from C Moy scoring 32 with some late aggression. The final two wickets were shared between the second change pair of Ben Asker and Paul Feavearyear, leaving Sheringham all out for 124, in the 43rd over.

A good team performance from GCC, and a good start that I hope will be a much stronger season, in which we must be looking to compete for promotion.

Back at The Langley, the 3rds were up against Gooderstone CC. New captain Eddie Thorne won the toss and put the visitors in to bat, and in another low scoring game, Gooderstone were bowled out for just 143 with Peter Barnes displaying his old magic and taking seven wickets! In reply, Garby chased down Gooderstone’s total in 34 overs and finished on 144 for 5. Chris Pringle was the pick of the Garby batsmen with 59 runs. The team is pictured below.

It was a win for the 4ths but without them lifting a bat. They were due to play Hardingham but Hardingham were unable to muster a team and called the game off.

Welcome to Dan Constable, our overseas player

Aussie Dan Constable has joined GCC as our overseas player for the season. Dan is from near Sydney and will be playing for the first team as well as coaching the youngsters on a Friday evening and coaching in local schools. Dan has already had a session at Thetford Grammar School where he’ll be coaching year 10s on Tuesdays and years 4, 5 and 6 on Thursdays. His first session, which went down very well with all the pupils, focussed on fielding skills including throwing, catching and using the long barrier technique to stop the ball.

We hope Dan enjoys his time with the club (yes, the weather will get warmer!) and we wish him all the best for the season.
