Garboldisham v Swardeston A match report

Garboldisham vs Swardeston A Saturday 28 May 2016

Garboldisham came up against a strong looking Swardeston ‘A’ side at The Langley on an overcast afternoon. The Foxes 1st XI were without captain D. Cash, and opening bowlers G. Barnes and K. Pask but were nonetheless strong. After captain for the day A. Hogg lost the toss, the Foxes were asked to bowl first – a decision Swardeston would later regret. Captain Hogg, opening the bowling took the wicket of Swardeston opener D. Martin in his first over. The very next ball in the following over, L. Rackham took his first of five wickets for the innings in a devastating opening spell which saw him finish with 5-29 in just 7 overs. Wickets continued to tumble for Swardeston as batsman could not put together any substantial partnerships. Garboldisham took wickets at regular intervals, with all bowlers getting involved in the action; R. Fuller, T. Davey with one a piece and D. Constable continuing his form with the ball with another 2 wickets. The only Swardeston batsman to withstand the relentless Foxes pressure was captain, B. Hogg, who finished on 35 not out as Swardeston finished the innings all out for 147 off 40.5 overs.

During the interval, Garboldisham knew the job was only half done and on a pitch that gave the bowlers something a bit extra – the batsmen had to be watchful. Swardeston got off to the best possible start, K. Williman was caught 2nd slip off the bowling of A. Levinson. However, D. Constable and H. Phoenix both managed to get through a tough period and come out the other side unscathed. Constable showed touches of real class on his way to 41 in a partnership of 88 for the 2nd wicket, until he was removed by M. Taylor. Phoenix continued to work hard for his runs and was joined by J. Wyatt, who together took Garboldisham to a victory in the 24th over with the loss of just 2 wickets. Phoenix finished on 56 not out, and Wyatt on 25 not out.

This is a third victory out of five matches for the newly promoted Garboldisham side, and an entirely impressive victory against the strongest Swardeston ‘A’ side this year. Garboldisham look to continue their form next week, away at Sprowston.

Match results and round-up for Saturday 28 May 2016

GCC Firsts were at home to Swardeston. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first but a cluster of early wickets from Garboldisham had Swardeston on the back foot from which they never really recovered and they finished all out for 147 after 41 overs. Luke Rackham picked up a ‘five-for’. It took Garby just 24 overs to chase down Swardeston’s total with a final charge from Henry Phoenix (56 not out) and Jonny Wyatt (25 not out). Earlier in the innings it was good to see Aussie overseas player Dan Constable clock up 41 runs, and in a weird coincidence, Dan was very surprised to find the match being adjudicated by Martyn Pointer who had umpired him in a match last year at Manly Oval in Sydney, Australia! It turns out that Martyn, who had emigrated to Australia in 1988, moved back to Norfolk this year. That’s three wins now out of five games and it places the 1st XI comfortably mid-table in the premier league.

The 2nd XI travelled to Stow CC to notch up another winning performance. The hosts won the toss and batted first but struggled to accumulate runs and finished on 151 for 8 after 45 overs. In reply, a half century for Andrew Whistler helped Garboldisham to 152 for 3 after 31 overs and they won by 7 wickets. It has been an excellent start to the season for captain Fevs and the rest of the team and they are sitting top of the 4th division with 118 points.

The Thirds were away to Reepham & Salle who batted first and finished on 179 for 8 with the wickets being shared around between Phil Carr (2), Arthur Johnson (2), Peter Barnes (2) and one each for Eddie Thorne and Angus Pringle. After a batting collapse from Garby it was down to the tail-enders and youngsters to try and push Garboldisham over the line but in the end there was just too much to do and Garby were bowled out and finished 32 runs short. Well done to Phil Carr who was 41 not out and Angus Pringle (17) and Arthur Johnson (15).

Tommy Fidler 111

Back at The Langley and the 4th XI were facing top-of-the-table rivals Hingham. Garby won the toss and put the visitors in to bat and Hingham accumulated a hefty 272 runs and were naturally confident that they had the game in the bag. However, the home side knew that if they made a steady and solid start and didn’t lose early wickets they could take advantage of the short boundaries on this normally high-scoring pitch. Openers Neville Kemp and Tommy Fidler survived a few early chances and soon had the scoreboard ticking over. Neville with a half century under his belt was out soon after but Tommy (pictured above) went on to reach his ton and finish on 111. It was good to see Harry Youngson back playing cricket for Garboldisham and he kept the runs flowing and together with Benny Goodman, they saw Garby over the line for 274 for 4 after 37 overs to win by 6 wickets. It was also a welcome return for Jack Halliwell who was out of action last season with a damaged shoulder.

Don’t forget that today (Sunday 29 May) is the GCC t20 match fun-day with the first game starting at 11am!

Hat-trick for Hamish

Hamish Russell (pictured back row right) took a hat-trick this evening (Weds 25 May 2016) for Garboldisham U11s in their win over local rivals Rocklands. Each side starts with 200 runs on the board and bats for 16 overs in pairs with 4 overs per pair, and then 6 runs are deducted for every wicket taken with batsmen who are ‘out’ remaining at the crease. Garby lost just one wicket but the visitors lost 6 and so the net figures at the end of the match were Garboldisham 269 and Rocklands 244. Well done again to the U11s!

Close run game for U9s

Brooke U9s 60-5 v Garboldisham U9s 49-7, Sunday 22 May

It was a very good performance from the youngsters, many of whom were playing their first hard ball match. The game was very tight and with two overs to go, Garboldisham only needed 9 to win. However, Brooke’s strike bowler returned and took two late wickets which turned the match in Brooke’s favour. There are lots of promising signs for the U9s going forward for the rest of the season.

Wins all round for GCC

It was four out of four yesterday (21.5.16) for Garboldisham CC with wins for every team! And there were centuries for James Worby and Jack Stevenson and a fifer for Dan Philpott. Here’s all the results and match summaries.

The 1st XI were away to Fakenham who were last season’s Premiership champions. Garby lost the toss and were put in to bat and despite the loss of Jonny Wyatt’s early wicket for just one run, Kristian Williman and Henry Phoenix looked rock solid and they were 97-1 at drinks. Williman was dismissed for 65 but Phoenix carried on the good work until he went for 59. Captain Danny Cash pushed on and added in another 49 runs, and with handy contributions from Dan Constable (20) and Alex Hogg (17) plus a cluster of wides, the 1sts finished on a fairly healthy 249-8 after 50 overs. In reply, Fakenham stalled as they were contained by good bowling with wickets from Dan Constable (4), Alex Hogg (3), Rob Fuller (2) and Gavin Barnes (1), and the hosts found themselves bowled out for 170 in the 45th over. It was a very satisfying win and a great performance from the whole team.

The 2nd XI had a strong home win against Martham CC, and with four wins from four matches, the 2nds are parked firmly at the top of the Norfolk Alliance Div 4. Captain Paul Feavearyear picks up the story…

Garboldisham won the toss on a good looking wicket and didn’t hesitate in electing to bat. The innings did not get off to good start as Garboldisham lost the early wicket of Tom Davey for 0, in the first over to a good delivery and well taken catch. James Worby and Andrew Whistler built a solid platform, regularly finding the boundary and putting on 85 for the 2nd wicket, with Whistler falling in the 15th over for a solid 35.  Worby and Jack Buckmaster continued to push the score on with a mix of good stroke play and some lusty blows, until Buckmaster fell for 45. Worby punished the Martham bowlers throughout an attacking innings, making them pay for an early let off. He finally hauled out to long for 114. Garboldisham lost late wickets in the pursuit of runs, finishing on 266 for 7, with Ben Asker, Rory Olpin and George Gooderham all making useful contributions.

Garboldisham knew they would have to bowl well on this good batting wicket, and openers Sean Taylor and Tom Davey showed good accuracy, applying early pressure on the Martham openers, and it was the latter who struck with two early wickets, removing the opener K. Spencer, caught behind, and L. Smith caught at mid-off. Pressure was further increased on the Martham top order when Dan Philpot ran out the dangerous looking L. Dunn with a direct hit when attempting an unlikely 2nd run. Taylor bowled well but without luck during his spell, and Davey continued where he left off against Sheringham, taking 2-14. Dan Philpot (5-33) and George Gooderham (2-22) then entered the attack and immediately turned the screw on the Martham middle and lower order batsmen, taking wickets at regular intervals and rarely releasing the pressure. Garboldisham’s fielders supported their bowlers well, with Whistler making a difficult chance at long-on look easy. Matt Allin put in a good performance behind the stumps taking two catches and a stumping.

Another good all round performance to continue a strong start to the season.

The 3rds had a close run game at home to Heacham CC. Garby batted first and were 245 for 9 after their 45 overs, with a century from Jack Stevenson (102), 54 from Danny Moon and 25 from captain Eddie Thorne. In reply, Heacham fought back hard but couldn’t quite catch Garby and they were bowled out for 222 in the 42nd over. The 3rds are currently placed second in the LVL 2 West league.

The 4th XI were away to Mellis CC and with Garboldisham batting first, there was more big hitting from Neville Kemp with 66 runs, 33 from keeper Nick Asker and a useful 25 from Phil Carr plus 19 apiece from Toby Culling and Tom Fiddler, which all went to help Garby finish on 209 for 8. In reply the hosts were all out in the 42nd over for 172. With four wins out of four, the 4ths top the LVL 4 SW league!
