Another win for 2s but rain washes out 1s and 4s

Match reports for Saturday 11 June 2016

Rain stopped play at The Langley and both the 1st XI’s match against Old Buck’ and the 4ths game against Dereham had to be abandoned. The 1sts had won the toss and had put Old Buckenham in to bat and at one stage the visitors were on just 50 or so for the loss of 5 wickets but after the first rain break J Heaney steadied the Buckenham ship and he was on 87 not out when the game was abandoned. Out the back on the new pitch, Garby 4ths had batted first and had clocked up another hefty total with Harry Youngson scoring 74(?) and Toby Culling 50(?). The 4ths got to bowl just one over before the heavens opened.

Peter Barnes had organised a very successful lunch where members had enjoyed some good food and cricket.

Meanwhile up in North Norfolk the sun was shining on the 2nds who clocked up their seventh win out of seven games. James Worby takes up the story:

Garby lost the toss and were asked to field first. A strong North Runcton top order made a good start with opener G Rawlings and number 3, B Skipper scoring quickly on the massive Runcton pitch. And at drinks Garby feared chasing a big total, but after drinks Rawlings fell for 46 and Skipper for 60 and after that the home team really offered nothing else with the bat, and Garby eventually bowled the hosts out from the last ball of the innings for a below par 199 which gave Garby maximum bowling points! Wickets were shared between S Taylor-1,  J Gooderham-3, J Buckmaster-2, T Davey-2, D Philpot-1 and a run out.

The run chase started badly as Whistler edged to first slip for 1 in the first over. Worby and Leech then started re-building and runs were scored at a decent rate. Leech fell to long-off for 24 but Worby kept on scoring freely. Jack Buck’ came and went but Worby brought up his half century with a cover drive. Tom Davey was now his partner and he started slowly, playing himself in. Worby then mis-timed one and was caught at cover for 61 and Jack Stevenson came in and together with Davey they steadied the ship, both batting sensibly and hitting the bad balls. The game was in the balance with 56 needed from the last 12 overs. But then Stevenson released the pressure by hitting 16 in an over, but then he fell the next over bringing Philpot to the crease, and he and Davey saw the unbeaten 2’s home with 3 overs to spare with some lusty leg-side blows. It was a maximum 25 points for Garby and another great team performance which sees the 2nds now sitting top of the league by 46 points!

The 2nds celebrate 7 wins out of 7 back at The Langley

The 3rds had no game this week as their opponents had pulled out of the league at the start of the season

GCC fixtures Saturday 11 June

GCC fixtures Saturday 11 June 2016

The 1st XI are at home to local rivals Old Buckenham who are 3rd in the league with Garby sitting 5th and only 4 points separating them. The 2nd XI are away to North Runcton, the 3rd XI are away to Hillington and the 4th XI are at home to Dereham.

U11s make it 5 out of 5 in emphatic fashion!

Garboldisham U11s 346/2 (Net 334) beat Saham Toney 284/3 (Net 266) by 68 runs. Monday 6 June 2016

Garby batted first and all 4 pairs scored runs heavily and batted sensibly throughout only losing 2 wickets in their 16 overs. Charlie Aldous was again brutal with the bat scoring 29 not out and he put on an impressive 65 runs in his 4 overs very ably assisted by his partner Ethan Harris’s aggressive running between the wickets. Oscar Skilleter again looked class with bat in hand scoring 17 not out, and one very pleasing stat from the match is that all 8 batsmen hit a boundary in their innings! A very impressive 146 runs were scored in Garby’s 16 overs!

The boys took to the field buoyant and confident – maybe a little too confident at times as the bowling didn’t live up to their normal standards. Oliver Lambert and Beth Champion both bowled well with good lines, Champion picking up a wicket at the end and Charlie Aldous chipped in with his 7th wicket of a very impressive first season. The other wicket fell to a run-out by Skilleter. Saham finished on 284-3, 68 runs short of their victory target.

Strong win for U15s against Thetford

U15 vs Thetford. SNCL. Monday 6 June 2016

Garby batted first and Toby and Finlay formed a strong opening partnership before Finlay was caught on 43. Toby and George added to the run rate and Toby retired on 50. Arthur Johnson came in and smashed a quick 16 to finish the innings with George on 32 and take the team’s score to 170. Garby started well with Angus Russell making an early breakthrough by bowling Thetford’s opener. Pressure was added with some poor fielding from Garby but they got back in the mood with back-to-back wickets from Arthur and George Southgate. George Self and James Gornall bowled well and built pressure to allow Max to clean up the tail in style with 3 wickets.

Final score: Garby win by 62 runs. Garby 170-1 Thetford 107-7 (all out)

Match round-ups for Saturday 4 June 2016

GCC 1st XI were away to Sprowston who won the toss and put Garby in to bat. After an early wobble losing 3 wickets for just 10 runs, captain Danny Cash stabilised the innings. Some big hitting from Alex Hogg (50) and Kieran Pask (44) pushed the Garby score to a very respectable 248-8 after 50 overs. It was game on. After 25 overs of the Sprowston innings, the hosts were on 80-3 and by the 41st over they’d pushed on to 179-4. The match was in for an exciting finish and it was Damon Egan (106*) who scored Sprowston’s winning runs in the very last over of the match to leave them on 249-6 with a 4 wicket win. Disappointment for Garby but it was a great game played by both sides.

The 2nds were at home to Dersingham. Batting first, the visitors scored 202-9. In reply, James Worby (104) picked up his second century of the season and with 31* from Tom Davey, Garby chased down Dersingham’s total in the 39th over to finish on 204-5 and win by 5 wickets. This makes it six wins out of six for the 2nds!

At home to Castle Rising, the 3rds started in the field and restricted CR to 211-8 after 45 overs with Toby Culling taking 4 wickets for 29 runs and Phil Carr 3 wickets for 19 runs. But with bat in hand, Garboldisham went into meltdown and they were bowled out for 124 after 38 overs. Only Andy Freake (46), Phil Carr (28) and Sam Baker (15) managed to find double figures.

On paper the 4ths had a strong looking side but like the 3rds, they came unstuck with their batting. The hosts, Great Melton 4ths, batted first and finished on 217-6. In reply, Garby 4ths scored just 83 all-out in 30 overs.

U11s win at Hethersett and Tas Valley

U11s away at Hethersett & Tas Valley, Norfolk Alliance pairs league, 3 June 2016

Garboldisham 277-2 (net score 265) beat Tas 268-5 (net score 238) by 27 runs

Garboldisham travelled to play against a strong Tas team. After winning the toss, captain James Davey had no hesitation in bowling first. Tas’s first pair made a strong start, scoring 24 for the loss of no wickets, but some strong Garby bowling later in the innings, restricted the hosts to a below par 268-5. Charlie Aldous was again the star of the show with the ball and his final figures were 3 overs, 2 maidens and 3 wickets for just 1 run. Jack Whitlam was also very good with the ball picking up a wicket and the other wicket was taken by the off-spin of Oscar Skilleter! Defending only 38, Tas started strongly removing the wicket of James Davey in the first over, but some sensible batting in the middle pairings saw Garby push ahead and when the last pair of Aldous and Skilleter went in, they had no fear and took to the Tas bowling, hitting the boundary on regular occasions. Garby only lost 2 wickets and finished on 277-2 with a net score of 265. it was a strong all round performance from all eight boys and it continues the U11’s strong start to the season. Man-of-the-match goes to Charlie Aldous with impressive figures of 3o-2m-1r-3w and 10 not out with the bat! Well done to all!
