U9s lose at home in a close match against Norwich

Sunday 3 July  Garby U9s 269-5 (net 249) lost to Norwich U9s 273-4 (net 257) by 8 runs.

In only their second league match of the season the U9s did themselves proud, only losing by 9 runs. Highlights were Albert Ballard with the bat, scoring a very good 11 not out and Ryan Stevenson 7 not out. Ryan also picked up 2 wickets, the other wickets falling to Jack Hendrie and Libby Worby in her first match. Promising signs for the youngsters.

Special thanks to Ashley Harris for running the match in my absence and to all the parents for helping to get the pitch ready and providing the players with refreshments. Well done to all.

Win for U11s at Swardeston sees them through to 1/4 finals

Swardeston U11s v Garboldisham U11s Monday 27 June 2016. Norfolk Alliance pairs

Garby under 11s demolish unbeaten Swardeston in their own back yard!

Garby 316-6 net score 280 beat Swardeston 294-6 net 258 by 22 runs.

Garby travelled to unbeaten Swardeston knowing they would have to play their ‘A-game’ to get a result. Winning the toss James Davey elected to field first. Swardeston got off to a steady start with their opening pair scoring 21 from their 4 overs for no wicket. Their second pair, with hard hitting Luca, scored freely but Oscar Skilleter got a vital wicket with a good caught and bowled and then the ever impressive Jack Whitlam took a second wicket in the next over when he bowled his school mate Luca with an unplayable in-swinging yorker. The second pair finished with 33-2 from their 4 overs. After this the Garby bowlers were all over the opposition – Elliot Harte got 2 wickets, both bowled in quick succession with an impressive variation of pace and spin bowling, and Jess Davey got 2 good run-outs. Swardeston eventually struggled to a below par 94-6 from their 16 overs.

Garby were happy with this total and chasing a net score of 59 to win they knew that if they batted well, like they can, it would be a very achievable target. Openers Elliot Harte and Beth Champion batted superbly, especially Elliot who smashed the ball to all parts from ball one. Beth also hit a sublime pull shot for 4, They added a very impressive 43 from their 4 overs for no wicket, Elliot hitting a very good 26! Jess and Daniel Worby then came in and batted sensibly scoring 20 from their 4 overs for the loss of 1 wicket. Jack Whitlam and James Davey then scored freely with some big shots and clocked up 36-3 from their 4 overs which meant that when the final pair of Charlie Aldous and Oscar Skilleter came in, Garby were at 297-4 with a net score of 275, putting them 17 runs ahead. The final pair batted well, defending good balls and hitting any loose bowling, and aided by some wayward wides by Swardeston’s bowlers, they finished up scoring 19-2. This was enough to give the youngsters a 22 run victory to put them joint top of the league which guarantees a top two finish and takes them through to the quarter-final knockout stages.

The young Foxes keep impressing and are a joy to coach. Well done to all!

Fun and thrills at The Langley for U9s/U11s

Inter-club under 9/under 11 friendly pairs match. Wednesday 22 June 2016

Due to all the call-offs for bad weather and the opposition not being able to field a team, the U9s have only managed to get one game in all season, so an inter-club friendly was organised to give the young boys (and girl) some much needed ‘match practice’. 16 youngsters turned out on an overcast evening at The Langley, the majority U9 but a few U11 to make the teams up to 8-a-side and they all did battle in a 16-over-a-side pairs match. The group were split into 2 fair teams and the nominated captains Jago Bucher and Rudi Howard walked to the middle for the all important toss, and when Jago called wrong, Rudi had no hesitation in bowling first.

Many of the inexperienced youngsters were taking part in their first cricket match. U11 newcomer to the club Ewan Edge, opened the bowling against U11 Dylan Starling and bowled well without luck in his first spell. Dylan and Elliot Wynn put on 20 for the loss of 1 wicket in their 4 overs with Logan Farmer picking up the wicket. Jago and Oli Lambert batted solidly without troubling the scorers too much and at the half way point (8 overs) Jago’s team were struggling a little at 24-3. Young Ryan Woodrow on his 8th birthday then came to the crease with Oscar Harris and scored freely, adding 19 runs to the total for the loss of 1 wicket and after 12 overs Jago’s team were 43-4. Last pair, the brother combination of Ethan and Oscar Harris
(Oscar batting again as a child had to go home early) also batted well adding 17 runs for the loss of 1 wicket which meant Jago’s team finished on 60-5, and with 4 runs taken off for each wicket they scored a total of 40.

Wickets were shared between:
2 for Ewan Edge
1 for Logan Farmer
1 for Rudi Howard and
1 for Ronnie Stevenson.

The total looked achievable if Rudi’s team batted well.

First pair to bat were Logan and Rudi. They struggled a bit with the good bowling from Lambert, Woodrow and Elliott Wynn and after their 4 overs found themselves 7-2 and behind the required run rate. Next pair of Libby Worby and Ronnie Stevenson picked the scoring rate up and after their 4 overs the score had moved on to 24-3, (net score 12) but work still needed to done with the final 2 pairs if they were going to get near their target. The third pair of Johnny Wynn and Ewan Edge did just that and scored 22 runs for the loss of no wickets and they pushed the score on to 43-3 (net 29). Ewan looking particularly impressive including hitting a lovely leg-side boundary. So the last pair of Albert Ballard and Jack Hendrie strolled to the crease needing a net score of 12 from there 4 overs to win the game. The first over bowled by Jago yielded 3 and kept them on course for victory, but the next over bowled by Oliver Lambert didn’t go to plan, 4 runs scored off it but Oli took 2 wickets, and with 2 overs to go Rudi’s team were 50-5 (net 30) and needed 11 to win. The 15th over bowled by Ethan Harris yielded 9 runs for 1 wicket and left Rudi’s team 59-6 and needing 6 from the last over to win… The Langley crowd were feeling the tension in the air and there was silence as Ryan Woodrow came up to bowl the last over… Ball 1 was a dot ball with no runs scored, ball 2 and Albert scored a single, so 5 was required from 4. Ball 3 and Jack Hendrie hit the ball to square leg and as substitute fielder James Davey threw the ball for a run out, it missed the stumps and went for 2 overthrows and 3 runs were scored… 2 runs were needed from the last 3 balls: ball 4 was another dot ball (well bowled by Ryan), ball 5 and disaster struck for the batting side – as the batsman tried to sneak a quick single, James Davey made a direct hit run-out and with 4 runs deducted from the score the batting team needed 6 from the last ball. Jack Hendrie smashed it for 4 but it wasn’t quite enough and Jago’s team won by 1 run!

A thrilling ‘Friendly Match’ and experience for the youngsters. A good night enjoyed by all. Well done to all involved!

Strong win for U15s at Hardingham

Hardingham U15s v Garboldisham U15s, SNCL, Wednesday 22 June 2016

Garby opened the batting on a rather green pitch, and with a meadow of an outfield, it was always going to be hard to score boundaries. But it was no problem for Finlay M and Toby who ran well between the wickets and raced ahead eventually bringing up the hundred partnership without loss. Finlay played a stunning innings including a meaty blow to fire the ball for 6, which hit the obstructing oak tree and Toby was equally as good and they scored another 50. Finlay also picked up his first half century and they left Garboldisham in a great position as they both retired. Max and Arthur followed and continued the mood, smashing runs with ease. Arthur played a fancy reverse sweep and put the bowlers under yet more pressure to bring up a very respectable total of 136-0.

In reply Hardingham started slowly with some tidy bowling from in-form Angus which was backed up by Max. With the pressure building, Toby and Finlay paired up, yet again, to piece together a well worked run-out seeing the Hardingham opener return to the changing room for 3. No batting was to follow but Garby still had some work to do and Max E, Max Champion and George Self all delivered, taking wickets including George’s figures of 2-0-7-2. Arthur and Toby cleaned up the tail with Arthur finishing the game off by bowling out Hardingham’s last man. Final score – Garboldisham win by 107 runs. Hardingham all out for 29. An all-round good performance including youngster Hamish Russell chipping in, in the field.

Grey, but great weekend for Garboldisham

Match reports by Danny Cash

1st XI v North Runcton Norfolk Alliance Premier League Saturday 18 June 2016

Garboldisham travelled to North Runcton on what began as a dull and miserable day. In typical fashion, skipper Cash lost the toss on a very damp wicket and Garboldisham were asked to bat. The innings didn’t get off to the best of starts with Williman removed for one when his off-stump was sent cartwheeling by the impressive Coote. Leech and Constable rebuilt the innings somewhat and the score progressed to 49 before a moment of madness from Leech: having firmly struck the ball towards the cover fielder, thinking he was Linford Christie, Leech called the overseas man through for a single. Turns out he was more like Agatha Christie and was run out by half a pitch length for 14. Constable and Hogg came to the crease and typically Hogg was in patient mood, happy to play the good balls and leave the bad balls, whilst Dan was looking to be a little more positive. Hogg fell for 10 caught behind trying a rare attacking stroke. Constable made his maiden league 50 for Garboldisham but was unluckily caught behind without adding to his tally. Pask came and fell cheaply and with the score on 103 for 6, Garboldisham were looking in trouble. Allin and Captain Cash tried to steady the ship and with Cash in an aggressive mood they put on another 43 before Allin fell lbw for 10. Walker walked on – and walked off again before a flurry of wickets fell including Cash for 40 to leave Garboldisham all-out for what looked an under par 157. They had plenty of work to do to win the game.

As Runcton started their chase, Garboldisham got off to the perfect start with Barnes dismissing Skipper for nought off the second ball of the innings. Pask then removed the Runcton overseas player for another duck to leave the hosts in trouble at 9-2. Freeman and Allsop occupied time, Freeman throwing his hands at anything full and Allsop patiently awaiting a bad ball. Cash introduced Hogg into the attack with immediate effect as he removed Allsop for 9, clean bowled. Hogg and Constable were really tying the batsmen up and limiting their scoring options. Hogg returned impressive figures of 3-4 from his 10 overs including 8 maidens and Constable contributed 2 wickets himself to leave the chasing side 89-7. With time running out and still needing runs, the Runcton tail looked to be more positive with Major and Ring both hitting some lusty blows. However Fuller managed to take the last 3 required wickets to finish with 3-19 and the hosts were all out for 134. This was an important win from Garboldisham which rewarded them with 22 points and leaves them tied 3rd in the league.

1st XI v Dereham Lady Mary Trophy Sunday 19th June

Garboldisham visited Dereham in the Lady Mary Trophy looking to complete a good weekend of cricket. Early wickets from Rackham and Pask removed the opening pair before Dan and Dave Lake took the attack back to Garboldisham. Davey came on for Garby and removed Dan Lake for 33 and the hosts were 90-3. At the fall of wicket, Cash remonstrated with his bowlers and fielders asking for more quality and consistency  – and his players rose to the challenge. Hogg and Davey bowled very well and between them managed to take the 7 further wickets to end the Dereham innings on 117. Hogg impressed again with 5-14 and Davey a good 3-34.

In reply Garboldisham lost 2 early wickets to the Dereham pace attack. Wyatt seemed hurried as he hit to mid-on from Pledger, and Leech the same, when top edging Anema. Allin was also dismissed by the speedy Pledger to leave Garboldisham on 37 for 3. With a batting re-jig, Walker and Pask were at the crease and they played superbly well, batting patiently and putting away the bad balls. They took Garboldisham to their total after 19.1 overs with Pask finishing on 36 not out and Walker 57 not out. It was a timely return to form.

All in all a good weekend for the boys.

Danny Cash

The weekend’s wet weather meant that the 2nd and 4th XIs’ games were abandoned. The 3rds beat North Elmham at home by 6 wickets in a game that was reduced to 30 overs per side. Phil Carr took 3 for 30 and Andy Freake scored 68*.

Impressive youngsters are GCC’s future

Garboldisham U11s v Mundford U11s SNCL Sunday 19 June 2016

Garby 101-3 off 16 beat Mundford 64-5 by 37 runs.

Garby lost the toss and were asked to bat. Oscar Skilleter and Ronnie Stevenson opened up and got off to a solid start before Oscar was bowled for a well made 16 that bought ‘Boom Boom’ Charlie Aldous to the crease. Yet again, Charlie played a match winning innings, batting sensibly on a tricky wet pitch, and hitting the bad balls for 4 and eventually finishing 22 not out. He was well supported by Ronnie (6), James Davey (7) and Daniel Worby (4 not out). The boys would have to bowl well to defend a slightly below par score. All bowlers did just that – bowling straight and disciplined and restricting Mundford to just 64-5 from there 16 overs. There was one wicket for Oliver Lambert and very impressive figures for Daniel Worby (pictured below) of 3 overs, 2 maidens, 4 wickets for just one run! Another win for this impressive young team. Well done to all! Match report by James Worby, U11s manager

GCC u15s will finish as group winners!

Garboldisham u15 v Swardeston u15 Wednesday 15 June 2016

The u15 boys were sitting top of the table and needed a win against Swardeston to extend their lead, continue their unbeaten run and gain breathing space between them and their close rivals, Diss. The game started well with Garboldisham batting first and forming a strong partnership, until Toby was dismissed for the first time this season, leaving Garby 28-1 after 4 overs. Oli and Finlay stacked up the runs with Finlay playing a spectacular cover drive for a one-bounce 4. But it couldn’t last as Oli was forced to retire as he raced to 30 and Finlay picked out a straight fielder. Garby were now in a spot of bother with two new batsmen – Arthur and George, at the crease. The situation got worse as George was run out and Garboldisham were 80-4. However Max and Arthur batted very well together and somehow upped Garby’s total to a respectable 126-4.

Garboldisham started well with the ball but Swardeston looked set to punish as they got off to a good start. Angus bowled tightly to steady the run-rate and Oli took a wicket at the other end. Flynn Drinkell scored 30 for Swardeston but not much batting was to follow and some good death bowling from George (2-2) saw Swardeston finish on 107, 20 runs short of their target.

The final score was Garboldisham 126-4 and Swardeston 107-6. Garby u15s will finish top of their group table, despite having one more game left to play, and will progress through to a finals competition! (Date to be announced)
