U15 semi final: Monday 8 August at The Langley!

Photo from the archives: Tuesday 20 July 2010. The u15s beat Vauxhall Mallards in the semi final of The Andy Seeley Trophy.

Tomorrow evening (Monday 8 August), captain Toby Culling will lead the u15s out at The Langley in the semi-final of the Norfolk Alliance Andy Seeley Trophy against Horsford. The u15s progressed to the semis after winning their NA group league and then beating Bungay in the 1/4 final two weeks ago. Please come along and help support the lads in this fantastic Norfolk wide competition.

Six years ago in 2010, GCC u15s captain Ben Asker led the team out to face Vauxhall Mallards in the semi-final of the same competition. It was a thrilling match and we’ve dug out the match report and reproduced it in full here:

Harry’s heroics earn historic final place

Norfolk Alliance u15 Andy Seeley Trophy semi-final. 20 July 2010

Vauxhall Mallards U15s 173 for 5, Garboldisham U15s 177 for 4

In fading light Harry Youngson smashed the ball for 6 off the penultimate ball of the innings to clinch a historic victory for Garboldisham U15s against Vauxhall Mallards in this thrilling semi final of the Andy Seeley Norfolk Alliance Trophy. Garboldisham will meet either Lowestoft or Sprowston in the final on August 18.

Mallards won the toss, batted first and were soon finding boundaries but a change of bowling brought on Joe Paul who took the first Mallard wicket as C White edged to Garby keeper Joe Seaman. And in the next over, the second Mallards wicket fell as Harry Youngson dropped in a shorter pitched ball that ballooned off the bat of Matt Plater for a simple catch to Philip Carr at square leg. Unperturbed, Mallards pushed on and their score continued to rise at a healthy rate until Carr thrust his arms skywards to snatch a second, dramatic catch off the bowling of Sarah McGahan and send Harry Barker back to the pavilion for 23. Mallard’s Rupert King scored a tasty 51 before being run out and S Campbell added in a useful 21. Bung in a few too many extras from Garboldisham and Vauxhall Mallards finished on a heady 173 for 5 which would be a tough one for Garboldisham to chase down.

Garby lost the early wicket of Matt Allin but Henry Phoenix and Ben Asker soon looked comfortable and started to build the innings, picking up lots of quick singles, and they were soon up with the run rate. There was an intense hush across the ground – it was ‘game-on’ and the audience were watching what would be a dramatic final quarter unfold. As Asker and Phoenix grew in confidence, so the boundaries started to come and the Mallards fielding became tense and nervy with overthrows and dropped catches. Garboldisham were right on the run rate and the Asker/Phoenix partnership looked unbreakable as they clocked up their successive half centuries. With the finish line in his sights, Henry Phoenix chipped two effortless sixes, one after the other over the square leg boundary and the audience hush turned into a roar of appreciation.

The game was all but won but then S. Campbell took two successive wickets in the 18th over and the Asker/Phoenix partnership was snuffed out in an instance and the game was turned completely on its head. Enter Harry Youngson and Joe Paul. Paul survived just one ball before M Plater sent his stumps flying and he was replaced by Joe Seaman in the 19th. Runs had dried up and Garboldisham needed 13 off the final over to secure victory. The sun had dropped from the sky and in the fading light Youngson took strike, picked out the ball and swiped it for six over cow-corner to throw Garboldisham a lifeline. A couple of singles and a double off the next 3 balls meant that Garboldisham needed 3 off the last 2 balls. Harry Youngson stepped up to the mark and wrapped up the game in style with a second six that flew towards the pavilion sending the appreciative home audience scattering and yelping with delight.

This was a terrific win for Garboldisham U15s against a very strong Vauxhall Mallards side.

Wins for 2s and 3s. Weekend round-up for 30-31 July

Pictured above: Phil Carr helps the 3rds to victory with a personal best score of 69 not out and two wickets

The 1st XI were away to Swardeston 2nd XI, lost the toss and were put in to bat with Dan Constable and Alex Hogg opening. Dan went on to score 55 with the rest of the Garby wickets tumbling for not many runs and it was only some late hitting from tail-ender Gavin Barnes (30) that pushed the 1sts to a more respectable 170 all out. Slow and steady batting from Swardeston saw them go on to claim victory with a 6 wicket win. Garby 1sts are still clawing on to 3rd place in the league.

The 2nds were at home at The Langley to Stow. Stow won the toss and put Garboldisham in to bat with Jack Stevenson and Jonny Wyatt getting Garby off to an excellent solid start. Jack went for 25 but Jonny went on to pick up 75. Add in to that an epic 82 from Jon Olpin and Garboldisham finished on a very healthy 241-8. Stow were no match for the Garby bowling and with 3 wickets apiece for Karl Gooderham and Rory Olpin and 2 wickets each for George Gooderham and Dan Philpott, Stow were all out for just 67 to see Garboldisham win by 174 runs. It’s good to see the 2nds hit back with a strong victory after a couple of defeats on the trot and they now have a more healthy margin of 11 points between themselves and Martham at the top of their league.

The 3rds were at home to Reepham and Salle, won the toss and put the visitors in to bat. Good bowling from Rowan Freake (3-19) helped contain the visitors score to 178-9 after 45 overs. 69 not out from Phil Carr (a personal best), plus 50 from captain Eddie Thorne and 41 from Sam Baker had the 3rds running home to victory in 35 overs for a comfortable 6 wicket win. They are currently placed 3rd in their league.

chris and Louis Hart

Son and father, Louis and Chris Hart (picture above) opened the batting for Garboldisham 4th XI at Hingham. Chris went on to score 31 and Garby finished on 123 for 9 after a rain reduced 35 overs. Hingham lost 6 wickets in their chase but in the end came out on top to win  by 4 wickets in the 27th over.

On Sunday 31 July, Garboldisham u11s had a close fought and exciting 1/4 final against Lowestoft at The Langley which they lost by just 10 or so runs. It was a very good performance from the whole team especially with the ball in hand, and despite taking more wickets than Lowestoft, it was only Lowestoft’s strong batting performance that, in the end, just gave them the edge. Well done to both teams for a match played in excellent spirits.

Today’s fixtures Saturday 30 July 2016

The 1st XI are away to Swardeston, the 2nds are at home to Stow, the 3rds are at home to Reepham & Salle and the 4ths are away to Hingham. Tomorrow (Sunday 31st) the u11s face Lowestoft in the 1/4 final of the Norfolk Alliance u11 trophy. The game is at The Langley and starts at 10.00am.

1sts thrash Fakenham + u15s through to semis

Kieran Pask (pictured left with Henry Phoenix in this photo from last season) took 5 wickets against Fakenham

Match summaries for Saturday 23 July

The 1st XI thrashed visitors Fakenham by a massive 10 wickets! Fakenham won the toss and elected to bat first but Kieran Pask tore through their top order taking 5-26 and with Gavin Barnes (3-16) and Alex Hogg (2-22) cleaning up the middle and tail, Fakenham found themselves bowled out for just 71 runs. Garby openers Dan Constable and Alex chased down the visitors’ total in just 11.4 overs with no wickets lost.

The 2nds still remain top of the Alliance Division 4 despite their second loss on the trot – this week to Martham who now move up to second place in the table and are snapping at Garby’s heels. Garboldisham won the toss and chose to bat first but never really got going and were all out for 127. Ben Asker was Garby’s highest scorer with 32. Martham lost 4 wickets in their chase but had the game wrapped up in 30 or so overs.

The 3rd XI were away to Heacham in a low scoring thriller. The hosts won the toss and elected to field and with bat in hand, a 10-man Garby side scored just 104-9 with Sam Baker picking up 22. But on their low scoring pitch, Heacham struggled with the bat as well, and were bowled out for 98 to finish just 7 runs short of Garby’s total.

The 4ths lost at home to Mellis. Mellis 346-8, Garboldisham 146 all out.

Well done to Garby u15s who beat Bungay in the 1/4 final of the Norfolk Alliance Andy Seeley Trophy on Monday 25 July. Despite missing captain Toby Culling who was away on holiday, the u15s clocked up a good win which will take them through to the semis. Special mention to youngster Elliot Hart who had scored 100 earlier in the day for Norfolk u10s against Suffolk, and who helped the u15s to victory that evening. The semi-final will be held week beginning 7 August and will be against either Horsford or Gt Witchingham. Details to follow.

Garby u11s have their NA 1/4 final this coming Sunday 31 July against Lowestoft at The Langley starting at 10am. Please come along to lend your support.

GCC match round-up for Saturday 9 July 2016

Picture: GCC club stalwart Andy Freake scored 63 runs for Garboldisham 3rd XI to help them secure a 76 runs, top-of-the-table clash victory over Castle Acre

Once again, wet weather caused chaos to all GCC teams’ fixtures with the 2nds away game at Rocklands being abandoned and the 4ths away game at Beeston, near Dereham, cancelled. But play did get underway back at The Langley for the 1sts and 3rds…

Garboldisham 1st XI v Brooke 1st XI

With rain delaying the start, the match was reduced to 40 overs. Garboldisham were put in to bat and some big hitting from Henry Phoenix (75*) and Aussie Dan Constable (52) plus a quick-fire 24 from captain Danny Cash, pushed the Garby total to a fairly healthy 198 for 6. However, it wasn’t quite enough and Brooke managed to chase it down with a couple of overs to spare (202-6) to win by 4 wickets. There were good bowling figures for Dan Constable who took 4 wickets for 24 runs.

Garboldisham 3rd XI v Castle Acre 1st XI

Castle Acre won the toss and chose to field first. Andy Freake (63), Dick Culling (49) and Charlie Wright (54) all starred with the bat and helped take Garby’s score to a hefty 265-7 after 40 overs. The visitors fought back hard in reply, but finished 77 runs short on 189-8.

U11s bounce back against H&TV

Sunday 10 July 2016: After last week’s loss to Old Buckenham, the U11s were back to their winning form against Hethersett and Tas Valley. This latest win takes them to the top of the South Norfolk Community League U11 Barnard League.

Sunday 10 July 2016 South Norfolk Community League

Captain James Davey won the toss and batted first on an excellent wicket prepared by Andy Smith considering all the bad weather we have had recently. Openers Elliot Hart and Jack Whitlam strolled to the crease looking to set the tone. Hart did just that, hitting the first ball of the match for 4 and scoring freely. Whitlam got a good ball first up and lost his off stump, but Hart continued in his boisterous fashion and after just 3 overs with the score on 39/1 Hart had to retire after reaching his quota of 30 not out. After this the run rate slowed down a little but all the Garby team added useful contributions – Charie Aldous 7, James Davey 14, Daniel Worby 10, Ronnie Stevenson 6 not out and Oscar Skilleter, a very patient and well constructed 19 not out. Oscar has impressed throughout the season with the bat, very solid in defence and punishing the bad ball with some excellent running between the wickets. Garby finised on a strong 132-4 from their 16 overs.

The young Foxes took to the field in high spirits and confident of defending their total, and when Hart knocked Tas’s key batsman Will Warley’s off-stump over in the second over with the score on 4, the youngsters smelt blood. All bowlers bowled well, probably their best bowling performance off the season. Dylan Starling was the next to strike when he removed the dangerous Joe Thorndyke for 14, and then Daniel Worby came on and took 2 wickets in 2 balls, and came within a whisker of a hat-trick, but the umpire (Dad) turned down his very close LBW appeal. Oscar Skilleter kept wicket for the first time this season and did a good job throughout the innings, stopping some very quick deliveries from Whitlam and Hart. Whitlam came back into the attack and picked up a well deserved wicket at the end and Tas finally finished up on 69-5 with Garby winning comprehensively by 63 runs to return to the top of the table. With 3 matches left, there is all to play for at the top. Only 6 wides and 2 no balls were bowled in the 16 overs by Garby which is a fantastic effort.

A brilliant all round performance from all the players, a joy to watch, manage and umpire.

James Worby
