U15 final this Thursday 10.30am

Garboldisham meet Horsford in the final of the Norfolk Alliance Andy Seeley Trophy which will be held at Great Melton’s ground near Wymondham on Thursday 25 August. The match starts at 10.30am. The U15s, captained by Toby Culling, topped their NA group league earlier in the summer and this meant that they passed through to the knock-out stages. Having beat Bungay in the 1/4 finals and Dersingham in the semis, they are now up against Horsford. It should be a cracking game! Please come along to watch and lend your support if you are free. Good luck to the lads!

Garby win Lady Mary Trophy! Weekend round-up

Picture: Alex ‘Hoggy’ Hogg has a good weekend with the ball taking 8 wickets

Garboldisham won the Lady Mary Trophy by 3 wickets on Sunday afternoon (21.8.16) in a close fought final against Bradfield. Great bowling from Garby including 3-12 from Alex Hogg restricted Bradfield to just 103 all out. In reply Garboldisham lost a nail-biting 7 wickets but Jonny Wyatt helped Garby home with a match winning 44 runs. Captain Danny Cash commented:

“Good result today to see the club win the Lady Mary Trophy for the first time since 1987! Good bowling performance all round and a gritty knock of 44 from competition winner Jonny Wyatt got us home! Tops off to what has been an already incredible season for the 1st team. Thanks also to the Garby army who gave up their Sundays to come and support the boys – always appreciated.”

On Saturday the 1st XI were up against North Runcton at The Langley. Runcton won the toss and put Garboldisham in to bat and Garby notched up 80 runs before the first wicket fell. The hosts finished on 175-10 with Dan Constable picking up another half century. A fifer from Alex Hogg (5-21), 3 wickets from Rob Fuller and 2 from Dan Constable saw North Runcton bowled out and 70 runs short. It was a resounding win for the 1sts that pushes them back up into 2nd place in the Premier League!

The 2nd XI were away to Norwich CC. Batting first they scored a very good 250-6 with Kristian Williman (76), Jack Stevenson (37), Tom Davey (36*) and Jon Olpin (34) all adding to the total. Norwich who are struggling at the bottom of Division Four and keen to avoid relegation, fought back hard and took the game to the final over, needing 10 runs to win. It went down to the very last ball of the match which was knocked away for four and Norwich won by 3 wickets. It was a frustrating day for the 2nds but they are still in with a chance of promotion.

The 3rds had a thumping victory away at North Elmham. They won the toss and chose to bat first. Phil Carr (20) and Danny Moon (26) built the foundations upon which Tommy Fidler (69) and Charlie Wright (29) accelerated. Lusty blows at the end from Eddie Thorne (21) and Toby Culling (22) helped push Garby’s total to 232 for 7 after 45 overs. Good bowling and fielding from Garboldisham, including a super catch from Eddie Thorne, restricted North Elmham 1st XI to 142-7 and the hosts finished 90 runs short.

The 4ths won at home to North Elmham 2nd XI. Details to follow.

GCC awarded £5,900 grant from Council

The club has been awarded a £5,900 grant from Breckland Council that will go towards refurbishing the shower and toilet facilities in the pavilion. Here’s the full story as it appears in the Diss Express

Garboldisham has received some doubly-good news following two grant awards for its sports and play facilities from Breckland District Council. The council has agreed two separate funding bids for the village — £5,900 will be put towards refurbishing and enhancing the cricket club’s 25-year-old shower and toilet block, and a further £4,440 to partially resurface the multi-purpose games area at the recreation ground. The games area is used by residents of all ages from the community of Garboldisham and also further afield.

The village has a thriving cricket community, with four Saturday league teams, a friendlies side, an over 40s team, a ladies team, and 100-member youth section. The total cost of the refurbishment is £7,500. Peter Barnes, Fixtures and Fundraising secretary at Garboldisham Cricket Club, said they were “delighted” at the grant award, and the work would make a “real difference to everyone.”

Improvements, totalling £6,250, will now be carried out at the recreation ground after tree roots damaged a section of the games area. Mary Anne Feakes MBE, Chairman of Garboldisham Parish Council, said: “The games area is used by residents of all ages from the community of Garboldisham and also further afield. “This funding will mean that we can restore the area to its previous good condition and work to mitigate the root damage can begin forthwith. “This is good news for not only Garboldisham, but the surrounding areas.” Cllr Charles Carter, Breckland Council’s Executive Member for Growth, added: “We received two very strong bids from the village and I’m pleased to support them both. “This funding will make a real difference to residents in the village and encourage visitors to make use of the facilities too.”

After a strong performance in the group stages, and a win in the last 8, Garboldisham u15 went into the semi final of the Norfolk Alliance unbeaten where they faced Dersingham on Tuesday 16 August.

Garboldisham won the toss and chose to put Dersingham into bat. Louis Hart and captain Toby Culling opened. Louis(1-12) bowled tidily and unsurprisingly made a breakthrough by bowling Chudley for 5. Toby (1-9) picked up a wicket of his own at the other end when Louis took a catch at mid-off. First change was George and Arthur (0-17) who bowled a tight line and built pressure. Garboldisham were in a good position and had Dersingham struggling at 31-2 after 7 overs. Nevertheless, Dersingham strung together a strong partnership and Cropley and Cotton both retired on 30. Garboldisham finished well and restricted their opponents to 99 for 3 after 16 when George Southgate ( 1-10 ) took an important wicket at the end. It was an excellent and tight bowling performance from Garboldisham.

Garboldisham went into bat needing little over a run a ball. Oli Campbell stormed to 30 and Toby played a steady innings to reach the same landmark later on. George Southgate batted well to reach 19 not out and Finlay hit a six to finish to reach 10 not out. A great performance from the lads winning with 4 overs to spare and it was good to have plenty of support on the sidelines.

Garby will be playing Horsford in the final which will be held next Thursday morning 25 August at 10am at Gt. Melton. Bring it on!!!

Diss Express Friday 12 August 2016

As the 2016 season begins to draw to a close, GCC 1st XI captain Danny Cash spoke to the Diss Express. Here’s the full extract:

Danny Cash has encouraged his Garboldisham players to not become bogged down by pressure during the final three weeks of their Dipple and Conway Norfolk Alliance Premier Division campaign. By the captain’s own admission, when the season got under way he and the rest of the squad would have settled for simply preserving their status within the division ahead of 2017. In contrast, ahead of Saturday’s derby clash away at Old Buckenham (1pm), eight wins this term has elevated Garboldisham up to second position, just 24 points adrift of leaders Brooke. One slip-up from the table-toppers would leave the door ajar for Garboldisham, but Cash is only concerned with his own team, rather than events elsewhere. “We just have to try to win our last three games and then see what happens,” he said. “It is just about us keeping doing what we are doing and making them win it. “There is no pressure on us because we did not expect to be in this position at all. “We can continue to play with freedom. Putting pressure on ourselves is pointless because we cannot control what Brooke do. “If they make a mistake and we capitalise then fantastic. But if not, I will still be over the moon with how the season has gone.” While Garboldisham have Brooke on their radar, a number of sides are in hot pursuit of Cash’s charges. One of those is fourth-placed Old Bucks, who find themselves just 20 points adrift of their upcoming visitors. Despite the fact that the close proximity between the clubs means that the two sets of players know each other well, Cash is not expecting any favours. “They are a very good side that are bound to be confident after getting a good win over Diss last time out,” he added. “When we played them at home the weather intervened, but it looked like it was going to be a close match. “They have some very good cricketers so we are well aware that it is not going to be an easy game.”

U17s season finally underway with win over Mattishall

Picture: Toby Culling takes 6 wickets for just 9 runs including a four-ball hat trick!

On a lovely summer’s evening (Wednesday 10 August 2016) Garboldisham finally got their Under 17 SNCL season under way with a victory away to Mattishall, with the visitors batting first.

Culling (3) was bowled early to Fisher before Baker and Penrose got the scoreboard ticking, Penrose was stumped with the score around the 40 mark. Tommy Ling joined Baker at the crease and together put on an unbeaten 80 run partnership with Baker (48) and Ling (38), both not out. Mattishall bowled straight and fielded well to keep the score down to a chaseable target of 122 on a quick outfield.

Early wickets were the key and Fisher (14) was caught by Ling off the bowling of Southgate in the 4th over. Davison and Gagen then batted well and the scoreboard rose to 70. Davison was then caught on the boundary for 25 off the bowling of Culling. This was a much needed wicket with the run rate getting out of hand.

Despite Dickerson and Humes hitting the odd ball to the boundary the Mattishall batsmen struggled against the swing of Culling who went on to take a hatrick and finished with the leagues BEST ever figures of 6 for 9. Garboldisham won by 40 runs.

A great win against the top of the league side.

U11s triumph at Norfolk Youth Festival

Monday 8 August, Manor Park, Norwich

Played at Manor Park, Horsford, the home of Norfolk cricket, the Norfolk County Cricket Board have this week put on a festival of youth cricket which started with the U11s hard ball competition on Monday which Garby came out of as winners!

There were two groups of three teams – Garboldisham were in group two with Horsford and Great Melton – with matches consisting of 8 overs where everyone (excluding the wicket keeper) had to bowl an over each with one other bowling two. Batting was in pairs for two overs each, with each team starting on 200 but losing 4 runs for every wicket lost.

Garby’s first game was against the hosts, Horsford. Having lost the toss, Garby were asked to bat first. All players contributed with Charlie Aldous hitting 11* for the loss of one wicket in a total of 245-1 (net score 241). Horsford’s batting was not as good as their bowling until the last over where Horsford were 239-1 after Aldous had taken the only wicket. Whitlam bowled a good line but two lusty hits from the Horsford captain including a boundary off the last ball saw Horsford finish the game on 247-1 (net score 243) which meant Garby lost the game by 2 runs. The team had played so well and came so close so had to pick themselves up for the next game against Gt Melton.

Gt Melton then beat Horsford comfortably meaning Garby had to be at their best to overcome Melton which they did.

Garboldisham won the toss and elected to field. Runs were at a premium for Melton as Garby bowlers stuck to their task. Daniel Worby took two wickets and then dropped a catch which would have seen a hat trick but a wicket for Whitlam and run out from Skilleter saw Melton finish on 237-4 (net score 221). Garby knew they had a good chance but lost two early wickets. Jess Davey 11* and Charlie Aldous 10* contributed to the Garboldisham total and with the loss of one further wicket, Garby finished on 249-3 (net score 237) to win the game.

This meant all teams had won one match each and the group was settled on gross runs. Gt Melton came first with 502, Garboldisham second 494 and Horsford third 493. Group one also finished with each team winning a match each. Burwell came out on top but as Stow and Acke had a lesser gross run score, Garby progressed to the winners group for the afternoon matches.

Same format but 5 ball overs due to time. Garboldisham played Burwell first and had a thumping win. Batting first all Garby players contributed to the score as they reached 252-2 (net score 244) in their allotted overs with extras the main contributor of 31! Burwell were never in the hunt as Jess Davey took a wicket with the first ball of the innings. 2 wickets for Whitlam, 1 each for Worby and Aldous plus a run out saw Burwell end their innings 227-6 (net score 203). An excellent all round team performance.

Jack Whitlam (?) bowls for Garby against Burwell

Garboldisham then played Gt Melton knowing that a win would take the title, and the team put in a magnificent performance. James Davey called correctly and elected to bowl and kept Whitlam back which proved to be a good decision as Jess Davey, Ethan Harris, James Davey & Dylan Starling bowled accurately. Jack Whitlam took the only wicket in his two overs for four runs with excellent support from Daniel Worby and Charlie Aldous, as Gt Melton ended their innings on 235-1 (net score 231).

Garby kept the batting pairs and order the same in each game and this worked well again as Jack Whitlam 10* got Garby off to a great start. James Davey also played a captain’s innings with 11 as all players contributed to the total. Sensible batting from the final pair of Aldous and Oscar Skilleter ensured no further wickets fell as Garby finished on 244-1 (net score 240) to become champions.

Gt Melton comfortably beat Burwell to finish as runners-up.

A fantastic performance by the team especially after losing their first match and narrowly progressing by the thinnest of margins. Jack Whitlam was also named bowler of the day so the day ended on a higher note for him and Garboldisham cricket club.

GCC match summaries for Saturday 6 August

Four wickets and a half century from Aussie Dan Constable helped the 1sts to a comfortable win at home over top-of-the-table Sprowston. Garby lost the toss and the visitors chose to bat but found themselves bowled out for just 106 with the wickets taken by Dan, Gavin Barnes (2), Alex Hogg (2), Luke Rackham (1), Kieran Pask (1) plus a run-out. In reply, Garboldisham lost just the one wicket of Alex Hogg (21) with Dan finishing on 59 not out. The 1sts move up to equal second place in the table alongside Sprowston with Brooke CC moving into the top spot.

GCC 2nds were away to Dersingham in a tense thriller in which Garby just managed to scrape victory. Garby won the toss and put the home side in to bat, restricting them to 140-8. Jack Buckmaster took 3 wickets, there were 2 wickets apiece for Rory Olpin and Karl Gooderham and one for captain Paul Feavearyear. With bat in hand, Garby wicket-keeper and opener Jack Stevenson scored an excellent 73 but all the other GCC batsmen struggled to get into double figures. The game went right down to the final over and with no wickets in hand, Garby’s tail-enders picked up the winning runs to see Garby over the line on the last but one ball of the match… The 2nds hang on to top place in their league.

The 3rds were away and lost to Castle Rising. Details to follow.

The 4ths were at home to Great Melton in another close fought game. Melton won the toss and put Garboldisham in to bat and excellent knocks from Joe Baker (64) and Oliver Campbell (63) helped the 4ths to 287-7 after 45 overs. But it wasn’t to be quite enough on this high scoring pitch as the visitors chased down the Garby total in 43.2 overs with a score of 290-7 to win by 3 wickets.
