Jonny Wyatt’s 140 helps 2nds to big victory. Match summaries for Saturday 17 June, 2017

Jonny Wyatt scores 140 for 2nds Garboldisham 1st XI travelled a few miles up the road to face local rivals, Old Buckenham. Garby won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Tom Davey was on form and ended on 56 not out but the rest of the team struggled and the 1sts finished on 143 all out. Good bowling from Garboldisham kept Old Buckenham pinned down and four wickets fell, but in the end Garby’s 143 on the board was never going to be enough and the Bucks chased it down in the 43rd over to win by 6 wickets. The 2nds were at home to Beccles who won the toss and put Garby in to bat. Jonny Wyatt and Alex Cook were both on sparkling form and were either lofting balls away to the boundary or piercing the ring of fielders who could only watch in weary frustration on this very hot afternoon. Beccles were relieved to see the back of Jonny Wyatt when he was eventually caught in the deep for 140 in the 36th over with the score on …

Maiden century for Toby Culling!

Mellis v Garboldisham Friendly, 11 June 2017 Match report by Sandy Culling After the disappointment of Saturday’s results (1sts lost to Cromer by 79 runs, 4ths lost to Rackheath by 74 runs), 9 fine men and boys of Garboldisham travelled to Mellis. Having lost the toss, the young opening partnership of Toby Culling and Phil Carr started with good running between the wickets and put on 109 before Phil was bowled for 48. Toby and Arthur Johnson continued in the same vein and despite Arthur offering up a simple catch that was dropped, they put on another 100 partnership before Toby retired after smashing an on-drive to reach his first ever century. This left Andrew Whilstler to find some form after a difficult few weeks and he ended 8 not out with Arthur not out 49. After tea, the young openers George Self and Will Cunningham did a great job bowling straight and full leaving Mellis on 29 after the first 10 overs, the opening partnership was then broken by Andrew Whistler with a great spell …

Wins all round for GCC!

Match summaries for Saturday 3 June 2017 Garboldisham 1st XI travelled up to Fakenham. The hosts won the toss and put themselves in to bat and made a solid start with 82 runs on the board before Garby finally made the breakthrough just after the drinks break with a wicket coming from Dan Constable. This led to a whole cluster of Fakenham wickets tumbling for not many runs: 82-2, 93-3, 99-4 and 108-5. However, rearguard action helped Fakenham’s cause and they finished their innings on 186-8. Gavin Barnes took 4 wickets with Dan Constable picking up 3. In reply, 43 runs from Dan and 38 from Alex Hogg (both dismissed by stumpings) plus a late middle order partnership from captain Danny Cash (24*) and Jack Stevenson (22*) pushed Garby over the line in the 47th over and they won by 4 wickets to keep themselves at the top of the Norfolk Alliance Premier League! The 2nds were at home against Rocklands and batting first, Garboldisham made a wobbly start (20-3), but great knocks from Harry Youngson (87), who was parachuted into the 2nds at the …

GCC u17s pick up big win on first outing

Garboldisham U17s v Mattishall U17s. 31 May 2017. SNCL 16 over 8-a-side Match report by Toby Culling On a beautiful summer’s evening at The Langley, the unbeaten under 15s side of last year came together again for their first u17 match vs Mattishall. After picking names out of a hat captain Toby found his steady scoring self, last in the batting order. Oli Cambelle and Finlay Penrose opened and got Garb off to a flyer! 8 overs in, Oli was hitting boundaries for fun to help his team to 70 for 1. The fall of Joe Baker brought “Game changer” Arthur Johnson to the crease. The little man hit some big shots including a massive 6 to the club house where he was caught by coach Jack Stevenson. Arthur went on to demolish the Mattishall attack until being bowled for 27 off just 14 balls! Not bad for a Sunday league player… Next in was George Southgate who had clearly been watching the IPL and played an outrageous ramp first ball! The disrespect continued as he …

Bank holiday weekend round-up

It’s been a busy weekend of cricket for GCC. Here’s a round-up of all matches Saturday 27 May While England were battling against South Africa in the second ODI at the Ageas Bowl with a brilliant final match winning over from Mark Wood, there was an equalling exciting finish taking place at The Langley between Garboldisham 1sts and Downham Town CC. Downham had batted first and were 237-8 after their 50 overs. Despite good contributions from all the Garby batsmen, none of them were able to go on to pick up a big total that would see them easily over the line and going into the final over they needed 8 or so runs to win. Captain Danny Cash picked up a boundary and with 4 runs needed off the final ball, Cashy was bowled and Garby finished just short on 234-9. Over on the new pitch, Garby 3rds were facing Gooderstone CC. Gooderstone won the toss, batted first but struggled against the Garby attack and found themselves bowled out for just 91 with Fevs taking 3 wickets, …

U9s kick off season with a win

Tas Valley U9s v Garboldisham U9s. 21 May 2017 Match report by James Worby The Under 9s kicked off their season with an away match at Tas Valley. Captain Jago Bucher won the toss and chose to field. Jago and Ryan Woodrow opened the bowling for Garby and restricted Tas Valley’s scoring opportunities thanks to their accurate bowling and good fielding by all, including Oscar Harris who was undertaking wicket keeping duties for the first time. Jago, Libby Worby, Freya Button, Oscar Baker, Johnny Wynn and Braydon Grant each got a wicket too, meaning that by the end of the allotted 16 overs, Garby had restricted Tas Valley to a total of 139 for 6 (a net score of 109). Johnny and Braydon opened the batting for Garby and scored well, including an excellent 4 for Johnny, without losing any wickets. They were followed by Libby and Ryan, then Freya and Jago who all batted out their 4 over spells without losing any wickets. By the time Oscar Harris and Oscar Baker came on for …

Ouch! Match summaries Saturday 20 May

Photo: 2nd team captain James Worby breaks a finger while fielding in the slips. Worbs will be out of action for 4-6 weeks Garboldisham 1st XI travelled out towards Kings Lynn to face North Runcton CC. Runcton batted first and Garby found their openers impossible to dislodge, and 38 overs in, the home side were on 157-0. With rain falling, an early tea was taken and the game was reduced to 45 overs with Runcton finishing on 210-2. Garboldisham made a good start and were on 76-1 before another downpour forced them back into the pavilion, and with no let-up in the weather, the match was abandoned with both sides picking up just a small handful of points. Back in Garboldisham, the 2nds were at home to Bircham CC who batted first. 30 or so overs in, the Bircham batsman edged a ball which flew through to Garby captain James Worby who was fielding in the slips. The ball hit the tip of Worby’s left index finger and the captain was forced to retire with a suspected broken …
