Wins for 1s and 4s but 2s and 3s slip up. Match summaries 15 Aug

Match summaries for Saturday 15 August Kieran Pask (80*) and Henry Phoenix (57*) (pictured above) helped the 1sts to an 8 wicket win over visitors Dereham. Earlier in the day, Pask had taken 5 wickets as Dereham were bowled out for 184. This win gives the 1sts 23 points and with both Lowestoft and North Runcton (Garby’s nearest rivals in the league) losing out to their opponents, Garboldisham now have a 31 point lead at the top of their league over second placed Runcton (although Runcton still have a game in hand). Dereham batted first, but with excellent tight bowling from Pask and Alex Hogg, Dereham were 2 wickets down at the 10 over stage and only had 15 runs on the board. Gavin Barnes and Jack Buckmaster carried on the good work with the ball and Buckmaster took the breakthrough wicket of Dereham’s number 5 batsman to upset what was looking like a rock solid partnership, and from thereon, Dereham continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as they pressed on to up their score. Rob Fuller took their …

Foxes extinguish Brooke Blaze

Garboldisham Foxes U19s v Brooke Blaze U19s Wednesday 12 August 2015 Match report by GCC U19s captain Henry Phoenix Following the Foxes impressive victory over Swardeston, the U19s went into the game against Brooke high on confidence and enthusiasm to reach the Finals day at Manor Park. Garboldisham won the toss and decided to bat first and they went about their task of setting a large total with the same degree of confidence they came into the game with, alongside a belief in their own ability. Kristian Williman and Matt Plater opened up for the Foxes and hit their straps immediately. Plater was the first to be removed being caught at long-off for a quick fire 23. Captain Henry Phoenix then came to the crease and Williman and Phoenix continued to pile pressure on the Blaze fielders. Williman soon reached his half century with consecutive boundaries and had to retire with 50 off just 25 balls. Kieran Pask then arrived and with Phoenix still ‘scratching’ around, they both set about continuing their target of a large total. …

U19 Foxes through to t20 finals day after resounding victory against Brooke

GCC U19 Foxes finished unbeaten and top of their group after a big, big win against Brooke Blaze and now progress through to the finals day at the county ground at Horsford on Sunday 6 September. Any dampness in the wicket from rain earlier in the day had completely dried out and the surface was hard and fast and perfect for batting on. Garboldisham won the toss and batted first with both Henry Phoenix and Kristian Williman picking up half centuries, and with high scoring from pretty much all the batsmen, Garby finished on a mind boggling 246 for 5. In reply Brooke fought back hard but once their first couple of wickets had tumbled then the rest fell at regular intervals and they finished on 130 or so for 7 in fading light. Captain Henry Phoenix was probably the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets with an assortment of slow ball bouncers and some whippier fast stuff. It was a great evening’s entertainment – thanks go to Jonny Leech for the music and Pete Gray …

Latest player stats to 8 August

First team scorer Dawn Briggs has been working hard rifling through the scorebooks and crunching the numbers again and the latest player stats up to 8 August are now on line. As well as batting and bowling and wicket keeping stats we’ve also got figures for partnerships, catches and run outs (although these may not be totally correct as some teams do not enter the information in their scorebooks). Best batting average (57.00) and way out in front with highest number of runs (627) so far, goes to Kristian Williman. Robert Leech is up there with the second highest batting average (50.80) and Lewis Taylor has second highest number of runs (342). Williman and Leech – best batting averages   Best bowling average goes to Dan Philpot (8.72) but most number of wickets goes to Rob Fuller (29). Pascal Walker (first team wicket keeper) has taken the highest number of catches (16) closely followed by Lewis Taylor (second team wickie) with (14) and Pascal tops the wicket keeping table with 24 dismissals (16 catches and 8 stumpings). Simply go …

Six-a-side fun day. Sunday 9 August

Photo shows this year’s winners – the Wuffam Wavers Everyone had a great time at this year’s six-a-side tournament held at The Langley on Sunday 9 August. There were eight teams split into two groups: The Six Offenders (Henry’s Team), The Gerri Hattricks (over 40s), Dads and lads (Dick), The Nomads?, Wuffam Wavers (Jack B), Kiss my Chaminda Vaas (Danny’s mob), Fullerlulus (Rob Fuller’s team) and Batgirls and Robin (Lydia’s team). Each team batted for 5 overs per game with each player bowling one over. The winners were Jack B’s Wuffam Waverers, and the Fullerlulus picked up the Plate for best of the losers. Highlights of the day included Cashy hitting Andrew Whistler’s one over for 34 – one 4 and 5 sixes – don’t think Whistles will bowl again for a while! Pascal attempted a catch in front of the pavilion, one handed with a pint in the other, absolute disaster. He dropped the catch, spilt the pint all over himself, pushed the ball over the boundary for a 6 and cut his lip!! And Rob Fuller has blotted his copybook with Leanne after hitting her for 6 so …

U19 t20 update

Picture shows U19 captain Henry Phoenix This Wednesday 12 August the GCC U19 Foxes play their last group game at home against Brooke Blaze which will determine whether they progress to be one of the final four teams for the Norfolk t20 U19 finals day on September 6 at the county ground at Horsford. The Foxes are in a pretty good position in their group having won the first two of their three group games against Sprowston and Swardeston back in July but they do need to win this last group game to guarantee a place in the finals so please come along to lend your support and enjoy some fast paced t20 action! If you didn’t see the Foxes hard fought match against Swardeston Sharks the week before last then here’s a reminder of how it played out. Match report by Foxes captain Henry (Henners) Phoenix… Swardeston Sharks U19s v Garboldisham Foxes U19s  29 July 2015 The U19s most important and difficult group fixture was always going to be against the Swardeston Sharks, but with a good …

Wins for 2s, 3s and 4s but 1s falter – Saturday 1 August round-up

Match summaries for Saturday 1 August After a super run of good form over the last six weeks the 1sts came unstuck at home to Lowestoft losing by five wickets. Garboldisham batted first and were all out for 183. In reply Lowestoft scored 184 for 5. Despite the loss the 1sts still sit top of the league. The 2nds played at home, bowling Old Catton out for 157 and chasing it down for the loss of 6 wickets to place themselves comfortably mid table. The 3rds had another good win which sees them move up into third place in the league and in with a very good chance of promotion if they keep up their winning form. The visitors Norwich Bystanders were bowled out for 154 which Garboldisham reached for the loss of 4 wickets to win by 6 wickets. It looks as though the 4ths had another thriller, this week away to Old Catton B. After losing last week off the last ball of the match, this week they were involved in a low scoring …

A chat with the Chairman

In the second of our new series of Q&As with key club members, we chat with our Chairman and club stalwart Robert Leech What are your earliest memories of GCC and when did you first join the club? I joined the club at the start of 1981 season.  My first game was away at Wortham and I thought to myself “What ever have I done!”  Fortunately, things only got better from that point! Explain your current role at the club. How long have you done it and what other roles have you carried out in the past? Chairman for 20 years, 4th team Captain for the third season.  In the past I have captained the first team. Initially from 1982 but I can’t remember precisely for how long as it’s so long ago but I do recall I managed to give up the role of Treasurer to become Chairman in 1995. What’s the hardest part of your role and what’s the most rewarding? The hardest part of being Chairman is making decisions that I know will upset some members but …
