The final against local rivals Old Buck’, proved to be a classic and went down to a very tense last over. Despite only scoring 233, Old Buck’ regularly took wickets to restrict Garby who fell short by just 5 runs to finish as runners up. Garboldisham Women off to cracking start GCC ladies, who are the 2015 and 2016 Norfolk Women’s Indoor League Champions, made a very good start to their winter campaign with two wins on the trot. David Whiting

A message from Peter Barnes I have been asked to let members of Garboldisham Cricket Club know that last Tuesday, former Club President Mr David Whiting sadly passed away. He was club captain for well over 20 years following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in which the family captained the club for around 70 successive years. He was my first captain and the first to lead us into league cricket with only one side. A true gentleman who all opposition respected and he always was happy to have a drink before and after games. He loved the regular tour fixtures to Podington, Wolverton and Castle Ashby. Many stories will come out about David or ‘Woody’ as the later members addressed him. LEGEND is a word used far too often nowadays but at our club he will always be the biggest legend. Funeral information to follow. Thanks for the memories old lad and thanks for making the club what it is today.

End-of-season groundwork

On Wednesday 14 September the Garboldisham pitches were ‘put to bed’. The last couple of matches – President’s Day and a friendly – had been played at the weekend and Garby Groundsman Andy Smith could finally put his feet up and call in the contractor Willimots from Norwich to come and do the heavy end-of-season groundwork. The pitches were scarified, dust and dead grass was removed, new grass seed was sewn and a top-dressing was applied. The pitches will be mown at fairly regular intervals throughout the closed season to keep them in tip-top shape ready for 2017.

Dan’s farewell message from Down Under

Safe and sound back in Wollongong! I’d just like to say what I was going to say on Saturday now! Thank you Garboldisham Cricket Club for welcoming me into your community with open arms and making me feel right at home. I couldn’t have wished for a better club to have fallen into the hands of. I’ve had quiet a good Garby experience I’d like to think, ranging from SOS vans, nights out in Bury, directing traffic in Northampton, ‘quiet nights’ up at the club, crabbing, the end-of-season-do just to name a few. I’d like to thank everyone who helped me with the bumps along the way, for example the car, the toilet and how to do the grounds work up at the club. Without you guys I would’ve been useless. I’d like to thank all the parents and junior players that came up to the club for the coaching days and coming up on a friday night. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you guys. To all my cricket friends and teammates – I haven’t …

U11s triumph in Carnival Cup – full report

U11s triumph in Carnival Cup – full report by James Skilleter After winning their league, the U11s were invited to take part in the South Norfolk Community  ‘Carnival of Cricket’ at Garboldisham along with Hethersett, Topcroft & Mattishall.  The format for the matches was 16 overs per side, no bowler could have more than 3 overs, batsman retire at 30 and cannot return, last man stands and 2 power play overs where runs and extras count double. In their semi final, Garby played Mattishall, runners up in their league. James Davey won the toss and elected to field. However the early break through did not come as Stoltz and Lake put together a useful partnership of 63 before Lake (8) was run out and Stoltz retired for 30 after 8 overs. From here the Garby bowlers turned the game round and were backed by the fielders. The next 8 overs only went for 31 runs as James Davey, Jess Davey & Ethan Harris took a wicket apiece plus another run out as the innings closed …
